Owncloud Users

  • Hi guys, after you helped me through the dungle of owncloud installation; I'm bit in doubt about the users.
I can see that I do have 3 users so far, the admin-account and 2 user accounts. I guess those users come directly from the OMV-Nas.

Can I delete these user accounts and create 2 new users with different passwords?
Do I risk something if I do such changes?

I created 1 certificate the time where I installed owncloud, is that related to only one user or doesn't it matter at all?

    best regards

  • Is that doable? My installation is based on owncloud 7, if I remember right did you clearly state in your guide that it's not allowed to disable the plugin else I will destroy my manual installation. I just feel it would be more comfortable to use different users also related to security? Maybe I'm wrong then?

  • You can do it if you are positive you do not want to use your system users. Then you can create users via the admin user. Be positive that this is what you want. Also, make sure you back up your config.php file.

  • Hi guys, I just started to sync owncloud from my PC and I did afterwards a mass deletion in the cloud. I'm no longer able to connect the cloud as I do get the following error:

    Zitat

    504 Gateway Time-out
    nginx

Well after a 8 restarts I managed to got all data deleted on the owncloud. Could this relate to missing ACL =www-data?

  • Yes you can.

  • Put privileges on what??? Your users that can create folders in ownCloud. ownCloud has it's own way of managing a user's rights. You do not put acl or privileges on anything. The shared folders from omv just make sure they have read privileges for other users. They will be mounted read only in the admin section of ownCloud, you have to have External Storage app enabled.

  • Well for my better understanding; I do have shared folder oc where I do have "Shared Folder Priviliges" Set for 2 users read/write. Should I pill them off as well. And what about the ACL settings on my Plex should I pull them off as well?

  • In the Guide the OC shared folder is the working directory. It does not contain folders/files you want to share with the users.
    OC folder:
chown -R www-data:www-data (I think in the Guide you do this to the OC folder but you do not mess with chmod).

You shared folder you are using with Plex should be:
    chown -R root:users
when you created the shared folder for plex you should use the default dropdown which I believe it is chmod 775. Then when the shared folder is shared with SAMBA it is further restricted. You do not need acl for plex. Privileges are set when the you use the defaults drop down on shared folder creation. Plex only needs read only for others. This is enough for everyone to watch/play the media files.

You have mixed 2 things here. It is better to keep things separate. Plex and ownCloud are quite different.

  • With media shares you should:

Create a "media" shared folder and use the default dropdown.
    Then share it with Samba.
Give your user read/write privileges to the "media" folder.
    Connect to the Samba share.
Then create new folders (e.g. Music, Movies, TV, Photos, etc...)
So all these items are in the the one "media" shared folder.

When you connect say the Movies folder in Plex you can direct it to that folder even though it is not a Samba share like "media".

We really need video Guides for this. It would make it so easy for new people. I don't have time to make/edit videos.

  • Multimedia should have read/write to your user. When you created the folder if you use the default drop down it will give read only to every user regardless of what is in privileges (because of chmd 775).

Only Mutlimedia should have privileges and the other folders should be created while you are connected to the Mutlimedia share and not in the OMV web gui. For media this is the best way.

Do not use ACL. People do not understand it and are using it way to much.

  • Easy way to think about this, If you share Multimedia and then you connect to it you can see everything in it. So why do you need to then share other folders (Movies, Music, TV, Photos) that are in the Multimedia folder??? You don't.

Now this is maybe not best setup for people that have porn or stuff they want to hide. But I could care less about them. I am trying to explain a good method for people with normal media folders/files.

  • It is best to create from the pc via the nfs,

They probably are messed up because you did not create them via a pc. Check the chmod and chown on them.

Change directory to one level above them and use stat command on them:
    stat Music
    stat Pictures
