Newbie Q.: How to share existing HDD over network?

  • I got my BananaPI recently and i am not familiar with unix so i am working with OMV GUI. I am sys technician so i know couple of things about computers, but i'm not specialised.

What i am trying to do is to add my existing HDD (with data on ntfs) on the network, so all computers on the network will be able to access those files.
I don't need any homedrives for each user seperately, i just want for my existing files to be available over the network without any limitation. I want to mount each drive to each computer on the network.

    How do i do that?
Do i have to use SMB/CIFS, NFS or any other service? I already tried to use all of them and none has worked.

So far i have managed to mount my drive to OMV and i can see it in the "File Systems".

P.S.: one more question. How can i make for my drives to mount automatically in situation when the disk is turned off and on again? Do i have to mount it manually each time?

  • Hum ntfs disk aren't good friend with Linux.
So I don't know if you can do what you want.
Omv can do that? Ntfs-3g is supported on omv?
On my Omv, I format my disk into xfs and it works.

P.S.: on Windows you can see mount share permanently or create a bat script with net use command, search on forum there are already topics on it

  • Yes, OpenMediaVault Supports ntfs, but it can get complicated on some parts.

You should share your Hard Disk with SMB/CIFS. Also, "It does not work" is no proper description.

"Well... lately this forum has become support for everything except omv" [...] "And is like someone is banning Google from their browsers"

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

  • OK i changed the drive format from ntfs to ext4. Is this better? Should be there and better performance now?

How can i access files on ext4 drive directly from the Windows 7 (if i unmout it from OMV and connect it via USB to computer)?
