Port 80 and DNS setup

  • Hi guys,

    1) So ive had omv running for several weeks now, everything locally seems to work well. However, i noticed in the general settings there is a default port of 80. Am i supposed to forward this port in my router and firewall too? Should i switch the port number to something else and forward it? I do want to be able to access my NAS over the WAN but wonder if forwarding port 80 is a good idea.

    segue...
I set up the plex plugin for a plex server and shared folders to some family members(which they can see) by forwarding the port 32400. Im wondering if NOT forwarding port 80 is causing the shares to disappear when they try to access it from time to time. Essentially do both port 80 (or something else i assign for default port) and port 32400 need to be open? I cant find a clear forum post about this.

2)for my dns entries i put both google servers on there of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Im wondering if I need to change something here.

    thanks for your help!

  • No, you should not forward port 80 for the web gui or use it via wan. It would be way better to setup SSL and forward port 443 to your OMV. But better yet use one of the OpenVPN plugins to connect to your LAN. Once connected to the VPN you can use http, or https, to your OVM normally.

Port 32400 needs to be opened for Plex to work properly via a remote location. But the traffic via that port is encrypted by the PlexMediaServer. Port 80 does not need to be open to the web for PMS.
