I may miss something simple here, but I have enabled ftp, created a share, privileged a user to this share (RW) and login successful with this user - just to find an empty root, where I cannot write into.
any advise?

Where was this share coming from? Try reset permissions next to shared folder section tab if you omvextras installed.
mh.. it's an almost virgin server and I just created a share, than enabled ftp, created a user and set the privileges, whereever I could find them.
As I'm new to OMV, where should I reset the permissions?
there are no extras installed.
You don't have the utility then. Check the permissions on the folder with ssh access. Use ls -la folder/
strange..
I put the shared folder into this location:
foldertop/folder
the foldertop itself has this permissions
drwx------ 3 root root 4096 Apr 2 19:42 foldertop
the subfolder this:
drwxrwsr-x+ 2 root users 4096 Apr 2 20:35 folder
user1 found an empty folder when ftping in
I added a user2, gave him privilage to topfolder/folder - and it got a homedirectory in folder?!
I removed all users and groups now, but cannot remove topfolder/folder - as it is still in use.
looks like quite a messup. is there a reset button?
Lol. Install Omv-extras, read my signature. Don't mess with ACL, acl doesn't control ftp access. USE the PRIVILEGES BUTTON.
nice, this worked quite well. is it normal, that there is a home directory created in the privileged folder?
Look next to users tab. That where you can select that home folders go to a data drive. Otherwise they go to default /home Linux path.
ok... I still have the problem, that I cannot delete the original share, although all users and groups are deleted. is there a way to force it?
If you cannot delete a share if because a service is using it. Go back to the reset permission utility and deselect the share you just picked and put none. Of you still cannot delete it is because another service is using it.
when I select "none" the "reset privileges" button doesn't do anything.
is there a view, where you can see, which services are using a share/directory?

This is just to release the share and being able to delete it from shared folder section
is there a view, where you can see, which services are using a share/directory?
Unfortunately no. A common practice is to inspect this file /etc/openmediavault/config.xml shared folders have an assigned uuid. Look where that uuid repeats inside the file, and under which service is being held. After that you can look at the service in the webUI to check that is effectively using the share and remove it from there.
ah, ok, your extra claimed the folder, after selecting none and save in the reset permissions tab I could delete the shre. thanks, very helpful. quite a relieve after the spiteful freeNAS forums..
