Ways to get better performance out of OMV on Raspberry PI

  • Hello there,

I am considering OMV for my second, currently-unused Raspberry Pi to share printers and provide a common portal to all other LAN services, mainly because I can never remember each one individual address. This would be an "address books" of sort for network services. Would such a service exist?

Additionally, would I gain enough in terms of performance if I disable all unneeded services? Speed is not a priority, but must stay responsive enough.

    Currently, I thinking about:
    - CUPS server
    - SANE server (if such a thing exists)
    - maybe automated backup of my website, through automatic FTP connection and dump.
    - buffer for urgent files, when no other hard drive is available
    - common portal to access other LAN services from the Internet, protected through password.
    - backup VPN server

Obviously it's unlikely these functions would be used at the same time. Currently, performance is barely acceptable on an overclocked RPi.

As a comparison, I have installed fvdw firmware on a Raspberry Pi, and although it provides less functions, it is much more reactive. The authors say it's built upon an Arch Linux kernel, and that everything else is built from scratch. htop shows it's only running 20 processes while using less CPU, while OMV runs 50, although only CUPS is activated. Specifically, is rrdcached really necessary when no HDD is connected?
