Is this a valid scenario?

  • I've built a replacement for an older fileserver with my new omv box.

OMV is outfitted with 4 2TB drives in raid 5.
My old server had a 4 500GB drives, also in raid 5 on a pci raid card.

Once I've migrated the data to the new omv server, is it possible for me to create a RAID0 array out of the older disks to total 2TB and grow my existing raid with it? so essentially adding one /dev/mdX to participate in the creation of another?

or is this just a horrible idea to try to get 500GB of extra space, and i'm likely better just creating another additional 1.5TB raid 5?

    Any opinions?
