  • Quote from ness1602: “there was some software that could blink your hdd ” You bought HDDs that have an led inside?

  • BTW: I use the following or similar scripts at customers (called from /etc/rc.localto get a clean list of slot positions. But no idea whether it works with OMV4 out of the box since the stuff is kernel dependent and made for Ubuntu. So in case you want to give it a try with OMV be sure to enable/use the Proxmox kernel (and if you're using the Proxmox kernel think about whether you better use a great zmirror instead of a lame mdraid1) Source Code (31 lines)

Quote from Nefertiti: “it does not matter to me to be on a pre-release since I like to live dangerously ” Good to know. So while being the opposite of a Linux expert you choose to use software versions that are tagged as for 'experts and developers only' by the creator. These pre-releases are for people trying to help by identifying and nailing down bugs, not for people who barely know what they're doing -- especially on the command line. Dealing with your 'reports' of stuff failing or 'I rememb…

Quote from sheepdoggie: “then the following command ” Seriously... the blue words above I repeat here again (Windows can access a share, Ubunto can't) are a hyperlink. You can click on links and read what's written there (for example the -t cifs stuff). Again: 'you're using a network protocol (which one we don't know)' so I assumed you would try to use Samba/SMB and as such linked to a Linux example suitable for this. If you're playing around with NFS you need to search for 'linux mount nfs' ins…

  • Quote from lenainjaune: “Even if I create a RAID with explicit /dev/disk/by-id these are NOT preserved by OMV web server and notifications. ” OMV is not involved here, it's the mdraid subsystem. And even if this uses those stupid device identifiers by looking into /dev/disk/by-id you yourself can get what device is which (by reading through hellion.org.uk/blog/posts/hotswap-failed-raid-disk/ again and using the readlink method for example). Of course you could use less stupid ways to waste one d…

Quote from Nefertiti: “board-package-rockpro64-0.8 ” Looks like you're running a 0.8 pre-release (not recommended) and you execute dangerous commands as root for no reason: sudo apt-get install linux-rock64 -y. Let's stop here.

Quote from FabrizioMaurizio: “On this matter, I bought this cheap adapter with the jms578 chipset ” Good to know. Just like Pine64's own 'SATA cable' this one also allows to add 12V externally to power even 3.5" HDDs. Seems like a great buy.

Again: updating OMV version on Rockpro64 There is really no reason to copy&paste random stuff from the Internet. If you run a RockPro64 it makes no sense at all to execute sudo apt-get install linux-rock64 -y as you did (this is for Rock64 and as such incompatible). Just use OMV's UI if you're not familiar with the command line. And most probably start again from scratch, this time using latest release version and not trying to ruin the installation by executing weird stuff you found somewhere o…

What are you trying to achieve? Rule of thumb: updating OMV version on Rockpro64 And which version do you run? The latest stable release is 0.7.9 but it seems you're using 0.8?

Quote from votdev: “i've enhanced the quick wiping using dd. See github.com/openmediavault/openmediavault/pull/328 ” I hope 1MiB is enough (ran into some strange issues years ago with a RAID controller changing drive geometry -- I guess this is also the main reason why ZFS adds signature at the beginning and end of disk devices)

  • Quote from macom: “Check out this thread: [HOW-TO] Connect to OMV SMB shares with Windows 10 Clients and Servers ” Do you personally use Windows 10? If so what is still valid with OMV4? I thought Windows 10 'even' is mDNS capable now so is it possible to access an OMV server that is named for example 'omv4' by accessing \\omv4.local?

  • Quote from tkaiser: “it's a bit scary that Ubuntu uses the rather weak NTLM authentication method ” OMG, the official Ubuntu wiki even recommends to use sec=ntlm for fstab mounts. What a mess

Use the search functionality with 'quicksync' or directly look here: Intel QuickSync setup help Maybe the most important info is: this is plain Debian you're dealing with and nothing is related to OMV. So everything you find wrt Debian Stretch and your CPU type (with integrated QuickSync Gen9 GPU) will fit. Quote from sohma: “Even though the CPU is Celeron, I can encode 30 mins of mpeg2-ts to h264 for 12mins ” It's a Celeron G and as such comparable to Skylake Core i CPUs or even XEONs. Their si…

Quote from Philbert: “can I Format these Drives to Mac Extended Journal and erase this info??? ” Most probably not or just by using dd there and calculating offsets (with ZFS there can be up to 4 vdev labels on a disk). The most easy way is to use ZFS itself so you could simply use OMV and add the ZFS plugin (+ proxmox kernel). Then there are two variants: - use zpool labelclear /dev/disk/by-id/$drive (replacing $drive with the correct identifier) - use OMV with your two disks as zmirror which i…

  • Quote from JeffMD: “it is really hard to rely on this software in a headless state when something as little as data errors freezes up the entire boot process. I could not even ssh in. ” Just for the record: 'this software' is called Debian/Linux. All OMV does here is adding the nofailparameter to fstab (where mounting happens) so unavailable disks should not delay/stop the booting process. Obviously something serious was/is wrong on the new HDD. And adding drives behind an USB3 hub is simply ask…
