USB 3.0 Problem - OMV 2.1.16

  • Hi guys,

i've installed omv 2.1.16 on my HP Microserver N54L and added a USB 3.0 PCIE Card from CSL. (Vendor from the USB-Chip is Renesas - chiptyp is uPD720201)
But i don't get them working.
lspci is showing it, but if i connect a external hdd at one of the two port, the System does not recognize the drive. Also there are some Errors at dmesg when starting the server

    Code
    root@NAS:~# lspci | grep -i usb

I also change the kernel with omv-extras to backport-kernel 3.16.0

    Code
    root@NAS:~# uname -a
    Linux NAS 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u3~bpo70+1 (2015-08-08) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Any ideas how to get that card working?

I think you need to maybe get a higher kernel. If the backport kernel doesn't detect it, it means is a relatively new card.
what's the model/vendor id of the card? With that you can start diving into the kernel tree to check when the card was added (if it was).

As an test, if you have time you can try and install Jessie and its corresponding backport kernel which I believe now is at 4.x to see if it works. If it works you'll need to install a custom kernel
    in your omv install.

  • I recently put a USB 3.0 PCI-e card in my OMV box. It's a Silverstone model SST-EC04-P http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=364

    root@omv:~# lspci -nn | grep -i usb

01:00.0 USB controller [0c03]: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720201 USB 3.0 Host Controller [1912:0014] (rev 03)

    My kernel is:

    Linux omv 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.68-1+deb7u4 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    The card works fine.

    It was $30.00US.

  • Hi,

thanks for the quick reply. i've reinstalled OMV but the error persists.
I'll try to test another USB 3.0-Card tomorrow (Asmedia-Chip)
Seems that there are some compatibility-issues between the USB-Card (Renasas) and the HP microserver Motherboard.

I'll give you an update tomorrow.

  • The one you find in my signature works as well...

    | HP Microserver N54L | 8GB RAM (ECC) | BIOS-Mod | 6 Disks - 40GB Intel SSD (Erasmus), 40GB Intel SSD (VMStore), 2TB Seagate NAS HDD (Data), 2TB WD Red (DataBackup), 6TB WD Red (Rec), 6TB WD Red (RecBackup) | Delock PCI-E USB 3.0 (Art. 89315) | deleyCON Dual DS 2x USB 3.0, 1x 2,5" & 1x 3,5" HDD | APC Back-UPS ES 700G | rsync to remote site | NFS | SMB/CIFS | SSH | omv-extras.org - VirtualBox |

  • Well, it may be possible that the USB chipset is not compatible with the MB, but I wouldn't be so sure just yet.

What does a more complete run of this command show? We don't know the version and vendor ID of yours:

lspci -nn | grep -i usb

I've installed windows 7 for testing purpose - and windows also does not recognize the controller. so it seems to be a compatibility issue between mainboard and controller.
I take a look at http://www.hardwareluxx.de/com…l-microserver-752079.html and there are only a few controllers that seems to work with this mainboard.
I've ordered a new card - the same one nachmensch used in his system, because this card is listed on the "compatibility"-list on hardwareluxx.

  • Well, your card has the same chipset version and vendor ID as mine, which does work. SO I guess you have confirmed a hardware compatibility problem. Good luck with the new card.
