External USB drives get swapped after reboot

  • I am using OMV 0.4 with two external USB drives formatted as NTFS
Addding drives, filesystems, shared folders, and SMB shares all works fine.
One drive is /dev/sdb1 the other is /dev/sdc1
The problem is, after a reboot, the drives are swapped. What was sdc1 is now sdb1 and vicea-versa. I don't believe you can control or predict which identifiers linux will assign to various USB devices. If you boot linux with multiple USB drives, you are not always going to get the same device identifiers. The fundamental problem here is that OMV just assumes that the drives used for storage will always use the same device identifiers, i.e. /dev/sdXX and this is simply not a safe assumption. I might add a new USB drive, remove one, I might occasionally boot up the NAS without one drive, etc. This screws up the shared folders and breaks the whole setup.

Any suggestions? Anyone experiencing issues with changing USB id's?
