PXE Plugin

  • Hello-

I'm attempting to set up a PXE server on my OMV. Currently my dhcp server is hosted on my pfsense machine and I have it directed to OMV, with the BIOS file name set to pxelinux.0 as specified. I'm wondering if there is a guide on how to actually use the pxe plugin though. I can't figure out how to add images, or set it up. I've set up a FOG server in the past, but I like the idea of OMV managing it instead.

    Thanks!

  • Hello,

I'm also interested in this plugin - mostly for install Windows hosts, any guide or advice will be appreciated!

    Debian 8.6 Jessie + OMV 3.0.latest Kernel: Linux 4.8.0-0.bpo.2-amd64
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400@3GHz
    Memory: 4GB RAM
    OS-HDD: Samsung SSD 120 GB +LVM

Full media and download center configured.

BIG and special thanks for OMV-Extras team for great plug-ins (especially: TeamSpeak, VirtualBox, Sonarr, Radarr, and rest I use :))

    Plugin: http://omv-extras.org/testing2…ult-dnsmasq_3.1.4_all.deb

    1. Download the plugin.

    2. upload it through via your OMV web gui.

    3. Install pxe: dpkg -i openmediavault-dnsmasq_3.1.4_all.deb

I'm using PXE, and it's work great.

Still I have a question here: How can I add entry in PXE to
    1. boot my PE iso

Could you please give me hand here?

to run my PE iso I've used:
    KERNEL: memdisk (cp from usr/lib/syslinux/)
    APPEND: iso initrd=iso/NAME.iso

It says no such file :(

I just built a minimal Windows 10 WinPe ISO using the ADK. Here are the settings I used to get it booting. I really need to add an initrd field but until then, the line feed works. If that still doesn't work, I can try to get your image working.

  • As always BIG THX!

It still says Loading ... to me but I assume it'll get started someday :D (Loaded already - works fine)

I really need to add an initrd field

Yeah, most manuals and guides I've read have this :)

Do you have any idea how to speed up booting process? I think TFTP is turtle speed :(

  • As far as I know and I read TFTP is only one thing to implement PXE, so no alternative here.
One more time great thanks for help and looking forward for plugin little update.

I think I'll create just simple cmd only PE and will use it for installs, and full WinPE with desktop for some rescue reasons :)

3.7 in repo. The initrd field will have to manually changed for existing entries.

Now harder part, how to boot with windows bootloader? :D
Here is what I followed but with no success, mby smarter and bigger brains will help me :)

My Windows PE iso is not booting, do I need Memdisk to be installed?

The plugin installs syslinux-common and memdisk is in that package. You do need to copy the memdisk executable (/usr/lib/syslinux/memdisk) to your pxe shared folder though.

  • I got the WinPE 10 booting.

Is it necessary to make the ISO executable (x)?

After WinPE boot, all I saw was just the command prompt screen.
I'm used ADK to created the ISO.

    Any idea?

No because the shared folders are mounted noexec anyway.

You created a base WinPE image. That is all you should see. You need to customize it to get more.
