How to upgrade btrfs-tools 3.17 to 4.9?

  • I'm currently running 3.0.64 (Eramus) with Linux omv 4.9.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.2-2~bpo8+1 (2017-01-26) x86_64 GNU/Linux as a VM in ESXi. How do I upgrade the btrfs tools (currently 3.17) to the more current version 4.9?

If I try to install btrfs-progs, it will try to uninstall openmediavault!

I noticed that that package is now called btrfs-progs instead of btrfs-tools.

    # apt list | grep -i btrfs

    btrfs-progs/jessie-backports 4.7.3-1~bpo8+1 amd64
    btrfs-progs-dbg/jessie-backports 4.7.3-1~bpo8+1 amd64
    btrfs-tools/stable,now 3.17-1.1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
    btrfs-tools-dbg/stable 3.17-1.1 amd64

You can't. btrfs-tools is a dependency of OMV and installing btrfs-progs will remove btrfs-tools which will remove OMV. Feature request filed on bugtracker - http://bugtracker.openmediavault.org/view.php?id=1683

  • Additional question related with btrfs-progs.. i uses btrfs-progs build from surcess (4.9.1).. and OMV 3.0.75.1

And after upgrade of OMV (i don't know from witch moment but I think in 3.0.63 was ok..) i start to receive an error message when enter filesystem tab (btw. new error window is really hard to copy a message content ) about missing "btrfs-show-super"

    btrfs-show-super since btrfs-progs 4.8.4 is:

    * deprecated and not build by default: btrfs-calc-size, btrfs-show-superIs

It's possible to switch OMV to BTRFS-INSPECT-INTE ?

  • Thanks for the guidance on btrfs-tools and btrfs-progs.

Just a somewhat related question, is there any built-in monitoring tool for BTRFS like there is with ZFS's Event Daemon (ZED)?

I'm using ZoL with the ZFS plugin for now for easier monitoring in the OMV GUI for just 2x4TB WD Se drives in mirror mode, but in the long term I would like to use BTRFS.
