Which Filesystem and Raid to use?

  • Hello,

right now i'm trying to build up 2 new systems, a HTPC and the reason i'm here, a NAS with Openmediavault.
    My system is:
    Mobo - Gigabyte EP35-DS3 s775 with a Celeron 430 (TDP 35W) CPU. I also could use a Core2Duo E6300 (1,86Ghz/65 W) or a Pentium DualCore E6600 (3Ghz/65W)
Network device is an Intel 1GBit PCI card (Onboard is OFF)
    HDDs - a 160GB Sata 2.5" with the System and 2 x 2TB Seagate Ironwolf
    Thats it :)
Ok What do i want? Of course the data for the HTPC, Owncloud etc.
The NAS is NOT supposed to run 24/7.
    And it should be a Raid1 .
But OMV does not offer me Raid1
    It offers me:
    Stripe,
    Mirror
    Linear
    Raid10
    Raid5
    Raid6
If i had to guess i would choose 'Mirror' - is this correct?

And as Filesystem what should i choose?
    Ext4
    XFS
    JFS
Hopefully i can get some advice, which i would really appreciate.

Edit: As a Backup there are planned to use a 2 TB and a 1 TB USB HDD

    Mirror = Raid 1

But ask yourself, do you really need realtime mirroring? I usually suggest that people schedule an rsync job hourly or daily to sync the two drives instead.

    ext4 is fine.
