Log files too huge

  • Hi, so i was having trouble logging in the web ui, a quick search showed that the reason could be to the lack of disk space, which i did check using " df -h" and ended up with

    Code
    /dev/sda1 27G 27G 0G 100% /

i immediately suspected the logs folder and after checking /var/logs i found some of these huge log files

    Code
    73580624 Jun 25 22:13 mail.err
    111123 Jun 5 07:35 mail.err.4.gz
    9273871086 Jun 25 23:48 mail.info
    269366125 May 21 07:37 mail.info.5.gz
    3581669398 May 21 07:37 mail.log.1
    136806400 May 28 16:57 mail.log.1.gz
    249740250 May 15 07:36 mail.log.2.gz
    304410651 May 7 12:50 mail.log.3.gz
    289602662 Apr 30 07:37 mail.log.4.gz

I would just delete them but some google search warned that it may break something if i delete them, so i wanted to ask the best advise on what to do?

I kind of remember quickly setting up my mail in web gui 2 months ago and i never actually got back to fix it because the notification system was not working, it must have accumulated errors.

Here is the repeated error in mail.log.1

    Code
    un 25 23:10:40 openmediavault postfix/pipe[5716]: 0DB6A988: to=<openmediavault-notification@localhost.localdomain>, relay=omvnotificationfilter, delay=0.09, delays=0.08/0/0/0.01, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered via omvnotificationfilter service)
Jun 25 23:10:40 openmediavault postfix/error[6502]: 0DB6A988: to=<*****>, relay=none, delay=0.11, delays=0.08/0/0/0.03, dsn=4.4.3, status=deferred (delivery temporarily suspended: Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=smtp.live.com type=MX: Host not found, try again)

I edited out my email, thanks!
I am also amazed on how well linux handles lack of disk space compared to windows

  • Just clean up the logs folder it wont break anything. Then you're able to access the webinterface and then fix your email settings. My mate got the same "issue".

    OMV 4 - Ryzen 7 1700 (8 Cores / 16 Threads 65W TDP) - 32 GB DDR4 ECC
    128 GB OS SSD - 256 GB Plex SSD - 32 TB RAIDZ2 (6x8TB HGST NAS)

Have you tested this yourself? sorry for being the anxious guy but i don't want to break anything because i don't have the time to fix it.
