HDD can't be mounted

  • Hi forum,

I'm using openmediavault on my raspberry since one or two years now. It has all times worked well. Since a few days I recognized, that a shared folder isn't available any more.
I have resartetd the raspberry but with no success. Also the systems sends me an alert via mail:

    Code
Source storage device not mounted at </srv/dev-disk-by-label-WD20EFRX>!

In the userinterface i can see this:

I have no idea to bring it back to work. Any ideas? I'm not a Linux specialist...
    Thanks for helping me!

    best regards
    s

    P.S.: My /etc/fstab:

    Code
    $ vi fstab
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    /dev/mmcblk0p1 /boot vfat defaults 0 2
    /dev/mmcblk0p2 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    /var/swap none swap sw 0 0
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
    # >>> [openmediavault]
    /dev/disk/by-label/WD20EFRX /srv/dev-disk-by-label-WD20EFRX ext4 defaults,nofail,user_xattr,noexec,usrjquota=aquota.user,grpjquota=aquota.group,jqfmt=vfsv0,acl 0 2
    /dev/disk/by-label/BACKUP /srv/dev-disk-by-label-BACKUP ext4 defaults,nofail,user_xattr,noexec,usrjquota=aquota.user,grpjquota=aquota.group,jqfmt=vfsv0,acl 0 2
    # <<< [openmediavault]

The key is in the status "missing". OMV can't see the drive.

There's a few things to look at:
    USB cable connections.
    Has the drive itself failed?
Has the drive dock and/or the drive dock power supply failed?

You could test the drive and dock by plugging it into another work station. It the workstation is Windows, it won't recognize the EXT4 formatting but if it recognizes the drive that would be a preliminary indicator that the drive and dock are OK.

  • Hi flmaxey,

thanks for your reply. It seems like the USB Dock and the powersupply are working well. I have attached the HDD to my WIN10 and the Datenträgerverwaltung is recognizing the HDD.

But I'm not sure how to test the HDD drive itself.

And another thing. If i put the second HDD (which is attached to the raspberry and is still working) to the dock and to my WIN10 machine it says:

So there is a difference between both HDDs

You could boot up your windows work station on a bootable Gparted disk to check the partition and the EXT4 format. Better yet, use a rescue disk like the Ultimate Boot CD (or something else that's similar) to check your hard drive, see if files are still there, etc. There's a "HDD" menu pick on the Ultimate Boot CD that would let you test the drive (use non-destructive tests).

If you're using a USB hub, I'd test that in-line as well.
