Installed VirtualBox on OMV 4.x but cant build a VM

  • Hello all,

I am very new to this plugin but i installed it via OVM-Extras.

I then tried to make a VM just to test it out.

But as soon as I start the vm I get a error

    can anyone help?

  • So i tired all 3 flavors of 4.x and the last build of 3.x and I can not get this plug in to work at all.

I am going to say there is something going on with my box. which is a shame because I really wanted to us VM's on OMV

  • welp. Did the install for the 18th time, and exported the install logs. found this gem burred in the logs

"WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist.
Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate
    headers, most likely linux-headers-amd64.

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed."

    i then did the following

    Code
    root@linuxmediapc:~# sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package linux-headers-4.13.0-0.bpo.1-amd64
E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'linux-headers-4.13.0-0.bpo.1-amd64'
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'linux-headers-4.13.0-0.bpo.1-amd64'
    root@linuxmediapc:~#

so I can not update the headers. I do think I am stuck.

  • FIXED. Here is the steps.

    1) Install OMV 4.x
    2) Boot into OMV and do the following
    apt-get install -t stretch-backports linux-{image,headers}-amd64

    3) thenapt-get update && apt-get upgrade

    4) do the normal steps to install virtualbox

    and it works now......

####these steps load 4.17.0 all tutorials i see where this plugin works they are on 4.16. Even though the machine will boot now. I can not turn the machine off. and after every reboot the virtualbox gives errors and detaches from the vm's i created.####
