Running OMV on a renegade board, has not been the smoothest process (trying to do updates fails entirely). I am keeping it simple atm with just remotemount (works) and now shellinabox, and it ends with an error in the log box. Looking through to the first fail point, shellinabox itself reports about root password and that it needs to be changed immediately. I am not sure if it is referring to my OMV admin account but it is running a unique password. Typing the error into google yielded no hits so maybe its a device specific issue. It seems to be the shellinabox package only and not its dependencies.
shellinabox fails install, something about password must be changed immediately

Yes, all the ARM images use
'1234''openmediavault' as root password but since we don't want to ship with an enabled backdoor you need to change this password at first login and will not be able to login via SSH unless you enable this in the web UI. I would simply do so and choose a secure password for the root account. -

No. It´s referring to the root login to the linux console of OMV via SSH. Establish an SSH connection to OMV and log in with user 'root' and password '1234' as @tkaiser has posted.

Sorry, I've been stupid, the default password is 'openmediavault' of course...
