Help Please :( Write Fast, Read slow, Rock64

  • Hey,
after I received some great help last time with my RPi3 setup, ive now switched to a Rock64.
    My Problem:
From Windows 10 PC with SSD to Rock64 external USB 3.0 HDD: 90-110 MB/s! Perfect!
Back from Rock64 to SSD: 0-3 MB/s! What?
I have no Idea how to fix this, what is going on? ?(
    Thankful for all Ideas!
    Thanks.

  • Ok, now im even more confused. It seems to be caused by the network.
This time, i used a switch instead of using my router as a switch aaand:
    Now Read speeds are ~100MB/s.
Writes now start at gigabit speeds, but then drop to 10MB/s after like 2 seconds.
Ill have to keep trying, but something is wrong here.

  • Damn, maybe i should stop using ethernet cables from 1998 and just buy a bunch of new ones :8
Anyways, im now getting 70MB/s in both directions. Gonna restart a couple of times and do some tests with different files, but it seems good enough for now.
    Thanks.

Just hijacking this real quick for a related Problem: I cant set my OMV to use a static ip. Once i switch from DHCP to static, it spits out this error:

    Anyone know anything?

  • I cant set my OMV to use a static ip

No idea since I'm not a fan of anachronistic rituals. If a ping rock64 works from your Windows box why would you care about addresses?

Addresses are for machines, names for human beings. It's 2019 now and even the most crappy Internet access routers (IAR) should do DHCP with dynamic DNS updates. And the way even most crappy IARs deal with DHCP leases your OMV box won't get a different IP address anyway.

  • Hi,

I have the same problem with file transfer speed with my Rock64 (4Gig ram). Rock64 connected to Gigabit router port.

From Windows Surface Book pro3 PC (connected to AC wifi) to Rock64 external USB 3.0 HDD: 10- 16 MB/s only.

    Back from Rock64 to Surface Book pro3 PC : 12-19 MB/s

I have tried all version of OMV from ayufan, pine64 website, pre-release or stable version. Check my USB3 to SSD adapter and was confirmed with UAS support.

Sent multiple email to Pine64 website and No single reply. Such a terrible company, will never buy Pine64 product anymore.

  • connected to AC wifi

Seriously: what do you expect from a wireless connection?!

Get a PC with Gigabit Ethernet, check speeds with Helios LanTest and provide a screenshot of '10 Gigabit Ethernet' settings if transfer rates are below 50 MB/s. If the Gigabit Ethernet connection shows transfer rates above 50 MB/s (as expected) try to understand what 'shared medium' means and what an insane marketing BS those Wi-Fi 'ratings' like 1300 MBps are.

  • Thanks for the replied.

Sorry, didn't realize that that's the speed I can expect from wireless connection.

I'll try a pc with Gigabit ethernet and see what kind of speed can I get.
