Hdd -> omv -> smb -> Apple tv 4k ?

  • Hello

I am sorry for this question, I did not know where to put the post since I don’t want to take any space for important questions.

    Fast question:
It is possible to run OMV on my rock64 pro, and set it up as a smb server with a cat7 Ethernet cable to my beafy router, and then run Plex on my Apple TV 4K and mount the smb drive from my rock64 to my Apple TV? So that the Apple TV would do all the transcoding.

    Long explanation:

I bought a rock64 pro 4gb with the intentions to stream 4K videos on my iPad or Apple TV or pc etc. But the rock64 pro did not have the power to transcode fast enough for a somewhat good experience. (Thank you random reddit post)

Hm then I read some where that I can mount a smb drive on a nvidea shield tv and use the nvidea to transcode if the Ethernet can transfer faster than 100mbit. But to save money, can I do the same process on a Apple TV 4K instead of a nvidea shield tv?

I am sorry about these questions. I am a new as one can get when it comes to Linux.

    Thanks from
    Chris

  • I do not know anything about apple TV. So I do not know what this piece of silicon can do and what it can not do.

As for the rest, it seems possible. OMV and smb are normal.
Plex probably will not care if resources are locally or remotely mounted. Everything probably comes down to the possibilities and configuration of apple TV and Plex.

  • No. Apple TV cannot mount any SMB drive. You need an App for that. For example VLC.

If you still want a pretty interface, Plex is the way to go. You can set it up to just stream the content without transcoding.

  • and then run Plex on my Apple TV 4K and

It seems that there is an Plex app for Apple TV available. Then it should be posslible to connect to OMV with Plex Plugin or Docker installation as an alternative to SMB.

  • Thank you guys for all the response. I did some more mind boiling reading on various sources that I can’t make plex on a Apple TV the main media server using plex. So I would probably just end up with the same result as before with a lot of buffering. There is one app for the Apple TV that I might try called “infuse” but my hopes are low.

Guess I need to spend money on a nvidea shield as the main media server would be the cheapest solution instead of buying a new motherboard etc., but thanks everyone for the time to response.

  • Try the app mrmc (fork of Kodi). If I remember correctly you can mount smb/nfs shares:

Here is a nice review from @wrxtasy:

It’s possible to install Kodi on your Apple TV 4K, but you need a developer account to be able to use it:

Here is the link to the tvOS Kodi test builds:

Yep, it’s not the newest, but works.

Instead of Plex I recommend to use Emby.

There are a lot of ways, to use Emby by your Apple TV 4K:

    1. Emby native App: https://emby.media/emby-for-appletv.html
    2. MrMC should be able to connect and sync your Emby movies
    3. Kodi with the Addon „Emby for Kodi“ should be able to connect and sync your Emby movies
    4. Kodi with the Addon „EmbyCon“ should be able to connect and sync your Emby movies

  • Hello

Thanks, for the info, I did some digging in MrMc, it does sound possible if I use the wiki page of MrMc

    https://wiki.mrmc.tv/index.php?title=NFS

But man... it is really above my head but I will try. Maybe not so soon since I feel so drained after doing construction work and now plumbing repairs at home (yah grow up life)

So I will install MrMc on my Apple TV, maybe it is more clear when I can see it. Thanks again.

  • Not to question your decision - but what exactly are your thoughts about that? Why can´t be Plex the way to go?

Thanks for asking, hm I did do that on my rock64 pro 4gb with open media vault as os with the plex add-on, I had connected the board to my router with a Ethernet cable and a hdd on the usb 3.0 port. But I could easily stream 720p but 1080p will stutter and 4K is impossible to watch on other devices like an iPad.

Before I got the board I used plex on my pc and it worked nicely but it was a bit irritating having to turn on my pc to streaming. So my idea was a cheap solution to have a small computer with a small power usage.

So now I am trying to make the rock work as a simple nas and then use a component I have laying around as the “working horse”.

Maybe just go to the side of some humble x86. What you want requires a lot of power on the side of gpu / vpu. Or go totally crazy... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSowrjIF18s

I have been looking at the lattepande alpha with envious eyes. And I also have a nvidea GeForce 940 collecting dust, but the panda is so expensive, plus it can’t really seem to get it in Europe and if I buy it from outside of the EU then I would pay an additional 25% for import tax.

I have read that some people talk highly os the Asrock J5005B, and I do have a itx-mini case laying around. The Asrock j5005B is around 105€ in Germany so that is a fairly cheap option. But then I would also need a power supply, ram.

I have also heard people talking about nuc’s but there are around the 200€ minimum, but the size is really nice compared to a mini itx case standing.

So I am balancing between the nvidea shield (as a easy solution as the working horse) or a motherboard with integrated cpu like the asrock J5005B.

But thanks very much, I like to watch the guys channel.
