Missing update package index on new install

  • Hi,

I had to install using the Debian net install method described here: Installing OMV on EUFI (J4105) Tutorial Available?

The install scripts, which I copied to a text file before copying them from there into my Debian install, were here: Install OMV4 on Debian 9 (Stretch)

Everything looked good, until I clicked on Update Management and got this error message:

The index of upgradeable packages does not exist. Please re-synchronize the package index files from their sources.
Error #0:OMV\Exception: The index of upgradeable packages does not exist. Please re-synchronize the package index files from their sources. in /usr/share/openmediavault/engined/rpc/apt.inc:114Stack trace:

To add to my woes, I can't now log in to my server via ssh. I've no idea whether this is a related problem.

    ;(

    Help!

Click the Check button in the Update tab.

The user you are trying to login with is a member of the ssh group?

  • Hi Ryecoaaton,

I've done that. I was worried because TechnoDad's video said there would be loads of updates and I've got none. I've just realised that the way I had to install (because of the UEFI setup on my motherboard) probably means t downloaded the latest packages anyway, during the installation process. Would I be correct?

The user you are trying to login with is a member of the ssh group?

Yes, I'm logging in as me. SSH was fine during the install (after I'd installed the Debian netinstall). I've changed my OMV admin password, but otherwise that's it. I've a feeling I'm being stupid, but I cant think what I'm missing. I've just tried to ssh into my old nextcloud server (on another machine) and I'm blocked in that as well. I think I have made a mess of my ssh keygen thingies, which I only ever partially understood anyway. I am vexed. I'm half hoping that when I get to installing the ssh addon to OMV it will sort itself out.

Thanks for getting back to me.

OMV changes settings for the ssh server since it overwrites the config. I don't think the user created when installing with the netinstall image is in the ssh group.

Even if your key are messed up, you should still be able to use your password or use the root user.

The ssh "addon" in omv is installed by default.

If you can login, what is the output of: apt-get update

  • I can log in as root, but not as user in ssh, so I've run apt-get update. I'm afraid there's a lot of it.

I haven't tried to plug in a monitor yet, as I only have one.

    Thanks again.

If you can SSH as root, but you cannot as a user, then there's about a 99.8% chance your user is not in the SSH group. In OMV go to Access Rights Mgmt/Users. Look at the groups that your user is a member of. One of them should be "ssh"... Assuming that is the case, click the user, click Edit, Click Groups, go through the list and find ssh, and put a check mark next to it. Save/Apply the changes.

Now try to ssh as that user.

Totally not helpful for your problem, but when I saw your username yesterday reminded me of something from my youth (some would say it's sad, some would say it's funny... I kinda lead towards sadly funny)...

When my youngest sister was like, maybe 4? so I was around 12.. She had this kitten that was extremely passive and pretty much let her do whatever she wanted to it, and like a lot of kids she was always dancing with it, etc. One day I was watching her and she was watching tv, playing with the kitten, etc. Well she starts "dancing" with it... and I notice it's not even moving. She sets it down, and even at 12, I could immediately tell it was dead. So I take it outside. Mom gets home I tell her, and we're all puzzled as to what happened. My Mom was mortified thinking my sister somehow killed the kitten accidentally. Well it should also be noted, the kitten had a bad habit of jumping in the dryer to sleep. We all knew to keep the dryer shut and always check it before drying just in case... My Dad literally never did laundry, but for some reason that morning had threw some stuff in the dryer. That afternoon when my Mom was getting stuff out of the dryer... there was pretty clear evidence that kitten had went through a cycle in the dryer.

The theory is my Dad went to put something in the dryer and got distracted somehow (as he is prone to do)... and walked away with the door open and the kitten jumped in. He then finished loading the dryer and started it up. My sister obviously knowing that the kitten would jump in the dryer on occasion, apparently then went in there and fished it out.

Genius! Thank you. That's it fixed.

As for your cat story, I'm in the sad category. I'm devastated for your sister, even though it is years ago. We lost a dog to an accident just before Christmas. I'm still having trouble getting over it. I never wanted a dog, but my wife did, and it turned out to be a really wonderful idea, until the moment she ran onto a road. I've written a blog post about our awful winter here: http://www.danceswithcats.uk/?p=2303

I've been using the name Danceswithcats for various forums and log-ins since 2001. I was single then, and had heard about message boards where you could meet people and chat. It seemed whizzy, and I signed up for one. My automatically-generated username would have been petermason9328 or something equally undistinguished, but the site had a link to an 'advanced' username generator, where you entered a couple of things you liked and it suggested a name. I put in dancing and cats and it spat out catdancer, which I thought was a slight underuse of technical wizardry. Anyway, I had the TV on and there was a trailer for a broadcast of the film, Dances With Wolves, and inspiration struck.

About a decade ago, I registered the domain name danceswithcats.net, and five or so years ago, I bought danceswithcats.uk. About twice a year, I get an email form a very nice gentleman in New York, trying to sell me danceswithcats.com. His initial offer was several tens of thousands of dollars. Each time he contacts me, I counter-offer $5. I wish him well with it. He's currently got it up for sale for $3395. Times must be hard.

Thanks again for your help. I have had nothing but good experiences on this forum. I love computers and have been playing with and using Linux computers for over ten years, but I am one of those people for whom technical stuff just does not stick. Even though the internet drifts ever closer to being a market rather than the library I assumed it would be when it began, forums like this preserve its original promise, by being a pool of knowledge, shared with friendship.
