My way for a safe change of system and swap partitions on OMV:
Local on OMV system:
Revert to run level 1
init 1
check swap partition
free
Turn off the swap partition
swapoff -v
check swap partition if it is off
free
comment out swap partition in fstab
nano //etc/fstab
#UUID=....
safe fstab
Reboot system into gparted live system
reboot
Adapt OMV system partition and swap partition in gparted.
reboot in OMV system
Use SSH to control OMV system:
comment in the previous commented out swap partition UUID in fstab
nano //etc/fstab
UUID=....
Copy the swap partition UUID Number from fstab
safe fstab
Assing to the new created swap partition the old UUID
mkswap -U "UUID" /dev/sdx
Force the kernel to re-read the partition table so that it is not necessary to perform a reboot. (is it needed?)
partprobe
Turn on the swap partition
swapon -v
check swap partition if it is on.
free
On the new free space, i can safe system images in addition, generated with clonezilla
