My 2nd NAS build

  • I've got an HP DL380e Gen8 14LFF, and i started to build a new NAS (the 1st is an Intel D2800MT, 4GB RAM, 8TB Seagate Ironwolf for data, 200GB SSD for system). I filled up the front cages with HP 4TB SATA drives, created 2 RAID5 arrays with 6x4TB, and mapped to the VM via RDM in ESXi. Added a 4 port HP GBit NIC to the OMV with passtrough.

Everything is works fine, using rsync to backup, Plex for media, AFP for Time Machine backups, SMB for other shares, Transmission with NordVPN.

    Specs.: HP DL380e Gen8, 2xIntel Xeon E5-2450L, 96GB DDR3 1600MHz HP Smart Memory, HP P420 RAID controller, 12xHPG4 4TB 7.2k SATA, 2x600GB HGST 10k SAS, 2xHP364T 4 port GBit NIC, Noctua NF-A4x20 5V on the P420 for extra cooling.

  • The performance is very good, but i have a 1G network, so i want to upgrade 10G in the future. On 1G, 110-120MB/s read/write over SMB, on the host, the RAID5 is about 3GB/s read and 460MB write (tested with dd). Power consumption avg 210-230W, the whole rack has 0.35-0.40kWh with 380e and network stuff. When i start the "work" server (DL360 G7 2xE5620, 72G RAM, 8x146GB 15k SAS), the load is up to 0.60-0.65kWh, the other servers for testing/dev, so i don't use all servers in 24/7.
