FTP suggestion

  • Hello,

I am a very novice user. I currently have OMV working on a Raspberry Pi 3 with 4 hard drives on my personal network. I am looking for suggestions on how to make it so I can access the 4 hard drives over the internet. I would like it to be at least semi secure.
Any ideas any tutorial videos on how to set it up would be great. I am also more than willing to upgrade to a new RaspPi 4 and whatever version of OMV if needed. Thank you very much.

  • You should not use FTP protocol over the internet. It is not secure enough.
Possible solution can be to use a VPN connection or some kind of cloud solution (nextcloud, owncloud,...). There are several threads here about cloud solutions.

    OMV 3.0.100 (Gray style)

    ASRock Rack C2550D4I C0-stepping - 16GB ECC - 6x WD RED 3TB (ZFS 2x3 Striped RaidZ1) - Fractal Design Node 304 -

    3x WD80EMAZ Snapraid / MergerFS-pool via eSATA - 4-Bay ICYCube MB561U3S-4S with fan-mod

  • Would that cloud be hosted by me??

AFAIK Yes. The cloud server solution is running in a docker image on the local OMV system.

In the Guides section there should be a tutorial for Nextcloud from @TechnoDadLife.

  • Instead of FTP use SFTP. It's already built into OMV and very secure.
