Back to Debian proper?

  • Hi, I am wondering, and this might be a no-brainer but I wanted to ask before I do something stupid:

As OMV is based on Debian, and OMV is installable as a package from Debian, even points to debian sources in /etc/sources.list would it be possible to ›downgrade‹ to Debian from OMV in a non-destructive way, e.g. keep my current config and have a Debian with the OMV package added on top?

I have OMV4 installed from the OMV iso.

  • I'm asking this because of the question when / if OMV switches to BTRFS, and I am sure there are very good and valid reasons for that, I want to have a backup plan in order to keep my current EXT4 setup (which is overkill for my purposes anyway). I could live without the admin interface and update the config manually — if necessary at all —, but as I got an exposed port to the net I need my security updates.

OMV never makes Debian a different distro. It just writes config files and disables/enables services for you. Whether you remove the openmediavault package or not, it will still be Debian.
