My new and first Nas build and some questions.

  • Hello Everyone!

I am going to build my first NAS. The goal was to be xheap and also not power hungry.

Here will be my hardware, still waiting for some parts.

    - Case: Cooler Master Elite 120.
    - MoBo: ASRock E350M1
    - RAM: Will be 2 Gb DDR3 (for now)
    - PSU: Be Quiet! System Power B9 300w bulk (80+)
    - 4 HDDs 1Tb each.
    - 1 SSD 32 Gb

This will be use manly as a fileserver with RAID 5 with OMV.

But I am also thinking about maybe using proxmox, virtualize OMV and Daphile for playing music from one folder shared by OMV.

    Will this configuration be enought?

I am a bit affraid that would be short and more of it, i am a bit affraid not too puch confident to have OMV as a VM.

Hope my questions are not too dumb.

    Waiting to read you.

I would not use proxmox with only 2gb ram.

    omv 7.0.4-2 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.5 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.10 | compose 7.1.2 | k8s 7.0-6 | cputemp 7.0 | mergerfs 7.0.3

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github

  • I think I found an another solution, i didn't look anought deep in searching.

I've just found out that there is virtualboc plug-in for OMV! Than i could create a small virtual machine for daphile wich require like 512 Mb of Ram and just run the VM when I need it or jeep it on all the time.

Like that i would keep OMV on hardware and not on a VM.

    Does it sound better?

It is going away in OMV 5.x in favor of using kvm/qemu/cockpit.

2GB is still pretty tight for running virtual machines. Doesn't really matter what the hypervisor is. Virtualbox probably uses more ram than proxmox.

I wouldn't use 1TB drives in a new NAS build. Unless it was SSDs for caches.

I'd throw the 1 TB drives away or use them as cold storage or for backups.

Using many small drives means more things that can break, more power consumption, more noice, less room for expansion, need a bigger computer case, fewer SATA ports left. And so on...

Also I would only use RAID if I really, really had to. But only if I had an experienced technician, with good knowledge of my RAID system, available 24/7. And also a couple of spare drives.

Also, when setting up a new NAS it is good to setup a backup system. Without good backups you WILL lose data. Sooner or later.

  • Wow, thanks all for your answers wich help a lot.

So first I will go for more RAM.

I'll also take a look at kvm, cockpit and stuff.

BTW I will still go for a raid 5 as it's still better than just one disk. My more important data will be saved on a cloud.
