I have an RPi4 and all the guides I've found to install OMV use Raspbian Lite Buster. This also seems to require OMV 5 beta be installed. I'm wondering if it's possible to install OMV 4 on a Pi 4 but use Ubuntu's server image instead? Would this help in making the system more compatible with OMV 4?

True but this is what I recommend for RPi4 users. It has been very stable for me.

No. OMV 4.x only works on Debian Stretch. OMV 5.x only works on Debian Buster.

No.

I use the "official" RPi4 image for OMV 4 and I have had no problems at all. Very stable. But I don't use it for anything demanding either. Just backups.
I don't use a USB hub.
I do use a FLIRC case for cooling.
I use a 32GB SanDisk A1 SD card.
I don't use RAID over USB.
I do use mergerfs between two USB connected drives, but they are both in the same powered USB enclosure, using the same USB cable and power. -

It definitely isn't official and won't be around long. I am quite certain the RPi Foundation image is more stable than the frankenstein armbian image.
