Problem with self created raids in Linux under OMV

  • Hello,

I'm new here in the forum and experimenting with OMV 5 on the Raspberry 4. I am aware that a raid using USB devices is not directly supported by OMV. The hard disks are recognized correctly. I created the raid by hand under Linux. This is also correctly recognized by OMV.

    Output:
    Version : 1.2
    Creation Time : Sat Jan 11 10:45:16 2020
    Raid Level : raid1
    Array Size : 1953382464 (1862.89 GiB 2000.26 GB)
    Used Dev Size : 1953382464 (1862.89 GiB 2000.26 GB)
    Raid Devices : 2
    Total Devices : 2
    Persistence : Superblock is persistent

    Intent Bitmap : Internal

    Update Time : Sun Jan 12 18:33:31 2020
    State : clean
    Active Devices : 2
    Working Devices : 2
    Failed Devices : 0
    Spare Devices : 0

    Consistency Policy : bitmap

    Name : ovm:0
    UUID : ce26da19:7d36e1d5:76715354:a9aef63f
    Events : 30067

    Number Major Minor RaidDevice State
    0 8 0 0 active sync /dev/sda
    1 8 16 1 active sync /dev/sdb

Now for my problem. When I try to share a folder the raid is not displayed. I have already looked at the logs, but I did not find anything, which for example indicates a permission problem. Is it really because the raid was created via usb?

    Thanks a lot

?( Can you create a shared folder? Shared Folders -> Add

I am aware that a raid using USB devices is not directly supported by OMV.

It's not supported, period, you're on your own :)

The best option for this is to have one drive for data and use the second to run rsync or rsnapshot overnight to backup the data drive.

BTW have you rebooted the Pi since you created the raid.

  • Many thanks for the answer.

I know it is not support, but I would like to understand it, because the raid is correctly displayed in OMV. (see screenshot).

The hard disks are also displayed correctly. (see screenshot)

Exactly when creating a shared folder the raid is not displayed. I've already restarted the Pi.

Creating shared folders has filesystems in the Device dropdown. Raid is not a filesystem. So, if you didn't mount the filesystem on the raid array with the Filesystems tab in the OMV web interface, you won't see it in that dropdown.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for the advice.

Here's how I set up my raid.

From my point of view everything looks good in OMV:Hard drives are recognized.

    Raid is detected and mounted.

File system on the raid is ext4. I can also write data to the raid via the Linux terminal.

When sharing folders, the raid is not detected.

Am I missing a crucial point?

Am I missing a crucial point?

Yep. Don't mount the filesystem from the command line and don't add the entry to fstab.
