System disk space and root password lost

  • Hi,
I have got my OMV 4 up and running but the system disk (24Gb out of 60gb occupied) is quite full and I'd like to do some maintenance and clear some space.
I did run Apt-get clear and recovered 1Gb but I think there is something huge to delete.
I'm not an expert of linux, just a user of OMV.

One more problem is that I lost my password for root user, but I still have access via ssh with my admin user/password (not sure if it is enough or if i should try and reset the root password, if yes how to?)

    Thanks for any help

Do a search for something like "system disk is full" on this forum. This is a common problem typically related to either:

    1. Placing databases and application data on the root filesystem.

    ...or

    2. Failed backups writing to mount points that are later mounted, hiding the files.

I don't have a password for root on any of my servers. I only use SSH and sudo.

  • Thank you very much @Adoby.
I tried but I've not found anything helping. Probably I'm too noob to understand what to do.
I tried to run sudo du -sh /*:

    /var/lib

Here you may have installed various software that have databases and caches and so on. If you have a big media collection and run Plex, it could take up a lot of space. But you may not want to delete it? It is possible to move it, if you know what you are doing and are careful.

    /srv/...

If you use USB or remote mounts and rsync, then a lot of junk may hide here. But to find it you need to boot from other media (thumb drive?) and look when nothing is mounted here. Typically the folders here should be empty then. Nothing mounted. If there are files here it might be junk.

If devices are mounted then the mounts may hide what is stored, by mistake, in the folders used as mount points.
