• Like the original poster I have an optical drive in the OPM box I made for my friend.
He is looking to have the Optical drive "available" to all network users since they have some old optical storage backups that they may want to access infrequently, and most of the Client computers do not have Optical drives is there a setting or an easy way for a dumb old windows user to do this?

  • Ok just upgraded everything to 3.0.54 still cant figure out how to share optical drive on the network. I put a data CD in the device. I can see the drive listed in Physical Disks.
Is it something other than SMB/CIFS. ?

It is treated the same as any filesystem in OMV. Mount the filesystem in the Filesystems tab and create a shared folder for it. Then you can use it in samba.

you need to have a CD in the drive.
Linux is funny about removable media, until there is a media in the drive it usually ignores the actual hardware
that said, however, OMV does show you the drive "/dev/sr0" but when you put the disk in it will auto mount it using UUID and disks label. there lies the issue. you can only share one Cd/DVD at a time and you will have to drop the share and recreate it every time you change the disk.
I do not see any other way of doing this.
unless there is a way to have a script monitor for cd/dvd insert/eject and sim-link new mounts in a shared folder

    like :
    1. have a folder that you share on network. .i.e. "/mediashared/" and share it as MyBackupData using Samba or NFS or both.

    2.have a script run on media insert/eject to create/remove a sim-link in the /mediashared/ folder
based on media label. so when you insert Cd/DVD "DATA_BK_SET1_dd_mm_yyyy" into drive
    a sim-link is created "/mediashared/DATA_BK_SET1_dd_mm_yyyy"
when you eject, it is removed.

not sure if it is possible or easy to do.

this way you do not need to redo the network share as it always be MyBackupData.
only it will have the data user can get or it will not.

  • Ok still not getting it to work at all don't need it to work automatically.
I am missing a step or doing things in the wrong order.

    1. Storage>Filesystems MOUNT dev.disk/by-lable/testdisk

    2 Access Rights Management>Shared Folders>+Add
    I get ERROR
Failed to create the directory '/media/2016-01-08-16-35-53-44/testdisk':
    Error #0:exception 'OMV\Exception' with message 'Failed to create the directory '/media/2016-01-08-16-35-53-44/testdisk': ' in /usr/share/openmediavault/engined/rpc/sharemgmt.inc:322Stack trace:#0 [internal function]: OMVRpcServiceShareMgmt->set(Array, Array)#1 /usr/share/php/openmediavault/rpc/serviceabstract.inc(124): call_user_func_array(Array, Array)#2 /usr/share/php/openmediavault/rpc/rpc.inc(84): OMV\Rpc\ServiceAbstract->callMethod('set', Array, Array)#3 /usr/sbin/omv-engined(516): OMV\Rpc\Rpc::call('ShareMgmt', 'set', Array, Array, 1)#4 {main}

but it still seem to create the path

    3. Sevices>SMB/CIFS>+Add testdisk

    4. Sevices>SMB/CIFS>Privlages (share test disk to the user)

Shows up on the windows side but cannot access the data

  • I think your steps is out of order,
you need to create a share first, in SMB tab than change rites to it
frankly I do not see and reason to change rights on CD share, it is a read only anyway. all you need is a read right and it should be there by default.

  • Hi everyone !

I'm sorry to unbury this post but I need help...

I've plug a blu-ray drive on my omv server. OMV 6 detects it, no problem. I've mounted it. No problem again.

(I put a Laurel & Hardy DVD movie to be sure reading is correct and lauch it in VLC on my PC client)

I've share it on SMB for Windows and no problem at all, it appears. But when I want to see what on the disk or create a network drive :

It says it can't access drive, maybe there is a network issue. I've just mount and share a SSD before without any problem.

The optical drive got read/write access (I know it's read only but I give max rights in case of).

I've manually reinstall as said here : Share optical drive (CD/DVD) on the network

    Ideas ?

    Thanks !
