Yes, all (7) my OpenElec clients (chromeboxes) plus some other things net boot and have their images on OMV.
What are my options to stay on 2.x until I can move to 3.x? Perhaps I can just run youtube-dl in a docker container.
-
Actually, there is already an online instance to do what I need to do. Doesn't take a list but would work for the few times needed.

Excellent!....and it does FLAC too! Thank you.

U R Welcome! ;o)

Just wish the link they give you could have been one that would download the file using curl/wget rather than downloading to workstation and then having to copy to OMV. Oh well, better than I had hoped for and very fast.

This tool -> https://www.freeonlineconverter.net/sites/y2mate/ is good.

other converter online about download youtube is https://en.savefrom.net/1-how-to-download-youtube-video/

I would recommend this Docker container which has a GUI for youtube-dl, the best video downloader out, not only from Youtube.
This GUI has customizable options and you can select MP3 output. I think is the best option and you don't have to rely on shady 3rd party services, all running from OMV!!
EDIT: Interesting, I didn't know that the downloader plugin (which is the same software) was still supported as today.

Have you used the plugin? You can select mp3 output as well. No shady 3rd party services there either.

That's funny. I thought it was discontinued, maybe got confused with the transmission plugin.
Only by reading this thread I discovered it's still alive

In general, I usually say the "Downloader" plugins have not been ported to OMV 5.x. The funny part is that the only plugin with downloader in the name is the only one that has been ported. RE: Why should you use or not use dockers

a big LOL for this one
I've bookmarked the link so next time I can bash those who still want to use Transmission/Plex plugins

Yes, me too. Actually I didn't know it existed in the first place. I'm sure I have seen it listed in the plug-ins but didn't have a clue what it was and ignored it. Funny when you discover something you didn't know you needed.

You guys are a tough crowd. I really thought this plugin description on the plugin install page would give you a very solid clue what it did:
ZitatPlugin to download files to a specified share using aria2, curl, or
youtube-dl.
.
aria2 is a lightweight multi-protocol & multi-source command-line
download utility. It supports HTTP/HTTPS, FTP, BitTorrent and Metalink.
.
curl is a command line tool for transferring data with URL syntax
.
youtube-dl is a small command-line program to download videos from
YouTube.com and a few more sites.

ryecoaaron it's not your fault. I never claimed to be smart. I usually need my nose stuck into it. When I read the above discussion between you and auanasgheps it dawned on me how it applied to my situation.
I've been testing it out. I have set a multiple download to download just the mp3 audio from a YouTube channel and I keep getting a .webm file format. I switched to just downloading the aac audio and I am getting my files in m4a format. I am currently checking out the other audio-only options.
Update: I tested all the options under Multiple. Here are the results:
What I Selected What was Download aac audio only m4a m4a audio only m4a mp3 audio only webm mp4/m4a webm wav audio only m4a webm m4a -

The plugin doesn't install ffmpeg by default. So, if the video doesn't have your selection format available, youtube-dl picks one. If you have ffmpeg installed, it will re-encode to the format you want.

Code$ ffmpeg -version ffmpeg version 4.1.6-1~deb10u1 Copyright (c) 2000-2020 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 8 (Debian 8.3.0-6)
Installed. Now I get nothing downloaded no matter what format I select on the Multiple download selection. Obviously I'm missing something. Does FFmpeg work automatically with youtube-dl?

I thought so but I would have to try. It has been a long time.
