hosting more then one Website

  • Hi Folks,

I got my OMV running on a N40L with 8G Ram and plenty of diskspace - at least for my needs ;)

I have installed teh websiteplugin to have the Gallery3.0 hosted there.

Now I would like to run a 2nd Website - for testing at first on the same server, but discovered it lets you configure only one.

Do I really have to start a VM for the testing Website or am I missing something?

    Cheers

    OMV - kralizec // Hardware: HP Microserver N40L, 8GB RAM, 5x2TB WD Green - LVM2, 50GB for system
Ubuntu // Hardware: HP Datavault, 2GB RAM, 4x2TB WD Green - LVM, 8GB For System
    RasperryPi - not used currently
    NAS-FSC-Q700 - about to retire?

  • Ok,

in the meanwhile I found the nginx plugin and installed it manually.

I think this can be marked resolved

    cheers

  • Sorry, need to re-open it:

the nginx plugin installation via webif hangs, so I killed it.

Tried next to install via CLI:

    root@openmediavault:/tmp# apt-get install openmediavault-nginx
    Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
    Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut
    Statusinformationen werden eingelesen... Fertig

Does that mean I need the backportkernel first?

    cheers

  • The nginx plugin is for OpenMediaVault 1.0, not 0.5, but it seems you're using 0.5?

There was an alpha version for 0.5 for a while but it doesn't exist anymore. The latest version definitely won't work with OMV 0.5. Great plugin on OMV 1.0. I use it to host multiple sites.

  • agreed, I am a little astonished about my system:

I searched the forum for upgrade option to 1.0 - came about your comments to wait......

Then I installed the backport kernel to migrate to wheezy - worked flawless

Afterwards I checked in the plugin menu:

which looks to me like a good(bad) mixture.

Now, good things first: this is not my productionsystem, but it holds some temporary data now.

can I rollback to straighten things out or should I go with a fresh install of wheezy and then directly to a clean 1.0 install?

The thing is, I am after nginx, if it would not be need I could live with the actual version

With that many plugins installed, I would start fresh. A lot of the 1.0 plugins have changed and you would probably have to reconfigure most of them anyway.

    omv 7.0.4-2 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.5 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.10 | compose 7.1.2 | k8s 7.0-6 | cputemp 7.0 | mergerfs 7.0.3

  • Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try - should have used a VM in the first place ;)

  • To be honest as the Os for OpenMediaVault is Debian the easiest solution would have been to install virtualmin after installing OpenMediaVault.
That way you can have the best of both worlds a media server and web server on one box.
You might have to play with the groups and permissions if you are going to host websites commercially, to ensure that clients cannot access your personal data.
Then thats the joy of hosting websites.
Another option is to buy a blade server off ebay, you can get them for less that a good night out. That way you can keep the web stuff away from the Nas

  • Good Morning,

    my usecase is as follows:

The Box will act Primary as NAS for my VU+.
It will hold more data in the future.
It should host my home Automation (fhem currently on ubuntu).
I definitely Need a Mysql DB and a couple of Websites (for non-production, for production I will use a different Server) but that will be lowpower as well - power is a bit a factor in good old Germany These days ;)
The rest areat the moment Gimmicks to me I am going to explore.

I have cut the broken System, then managed to install Debian Wheeze (Base System), then came some ugly part to resolve all dependencies for installing the newest Version of OMV.
I am Aware that it is not recommended to do it this way right now but the Need for multiple websitehosting and the availibilty of the box and Software suited my Needs perfectly.
Everything is available from github, but if you're lacy to compile yourself you Need to do some Research, but oyu can find the deb packages on the web.
Finally I learned a bit about putty pscp ;)
And the best Thing after all: all my temporary data is still there! I was reluctant to back it up in beforehand.

I tried the hypervisor from vmware and proxmox, also freenas and synology, but I figured out OMV is the best match for me.
The "product" is awesome and I appreciate your great work.
Thanks a bunch for all the help, I will stay with the community.
