  • Wow, how very opportune that this thread is here!


    So with the recent price drop and cashback deal on the gen8 microserver i was looking at replacing my trusty nl36 running WHS2011 with a new gen8 G1610T running OMV with a virtualized instance of 2012 essentials using the VirtualBox plugin. Spy Alelo could you answer the following questions if this is something you have tried in your lab. I'd like to use all four 3.5" bays for the Raid Array and run OMV from a smaller SSD using the ODD SATA port and a power splitter.
    1.) I see lots of old posts saying in AHCI mode you cannot boot from the OOD port. Is this still the case with the latest bios?
    2.) if it is the case, how would you recommend setting up the disks to be used by OMV
    3.) if you don't use the raid is it still true that the fans run faster/louder than they do if you do use the raid.
    4.) Would i need a debian driver to be able to mange the disks individually using the built in raid? or does this happen before the OS is loaded.

    Funny, I have one of these on my desk right now


    1. Not sure what you mean by OOD port, but I can tell you that the LFF drives from the front panel can boot on AHCI mode
    2. You don't want to use the controller on RAID mode since there isn't an official Debian driver for it yet
    3. I am not aware of the fans running louder while the controller is on AHCI mode, I would have to test that
    4. If you happen to get a working driver on Debian while the controller is on RAID mode, OMV will only see the logical arrays created by HP's Storage Manager Administrator. The software is in fact available to do the management with a live system and is included in SPP, or you can do it in offline mode.


    I am not sure this is the server for you to do virtualization, even though we have actually tested ESXi with it and it does work fine. One thing you COULD do, would be to install ESXi on an SD card and use the embedded slot for it. You could virtualize OMV then and assign the storage as you see fit, while also being able to add more VMs to your liking.


    This configuration actually yields better performance than running VBox guests under Debian. No promises, but I'll try to do something like that and see how it works since I already have one sitting here and is just collecting dust as of right now.

    The ODD port is the SATA port usually used for the Optical Disk Drive. http://hsto.org/getpro/habr/po…3cac1e9f1362ac4fed94c.jpg in the bottom right. If you can boot an OS from that then you get all for main drives for storage. If you could test if you can boot from port that would be great.


    The fan noise issue is described here again its an old post so I'm not sure if its been fixed? Basically it sounds like unless you use the raid controller the fans run @ 36% rather than 6% when not under load.


    I've always been warned off virtualising your storage, and with no vt-d on the G1610T i was also under the impression you could not pass through the raw disks. Think i need to just get my hands on one then i can put all this forum reading to good use.

    Oh yeah, the intention of the built-in SATA and the optical drive was to facilitate installations of operating systems in the event iLO fails or is not an option for you. Now, the real question is: will this recognize and boot an actual hard drive. I don't see why not, but I'll make sure.Passing the disks RAW with ESXi is not really an option, but since the RAID controller is actually supported for it, you can have one big logical drive for OMV. Is a little convoluted, I know, but is an option and gives you the room to VM a little. Just make sure you add tons of RAM. It should handle up to 16GB.

    And I almost forget to mention: iLO does a lot of incredible stuff. You can monitor your array condition if you use the embedded RAID option with it, temperatures, overall health conditions, power management, boot ISOs, boot floppy images, update BIOS live or offline, etc etc. That right there costs more than newegg charges for the whole server, is a great deal.

  • @eyegeegeewhy I bought a Gen8 G2020T because last December there was pretty cheap offer I couldn't pass by (~175 Euro). I did a lot of read ahead before the purchase and still missed some info. I'll try to help you, just know that I'm in no way a pro like Spy Alelo, just your about average user.

    You can boot only from the first populated slot in AHCI mode. ODD SATA port is 5th so you can only boot from it when the drive bays are empty. The ways around this I've read about so far are to either run in legacy (which is not good for SSDs) or RAID and use 1 drive Raid0 for boot (that's not good if you want direct access to the block device, for instance if you plan to run RaidZ or md and if you lose the raid you might lose your data). Other way around is to get a PCIx RAID and use that for the drive bays and only use the onboard in AHCI with only the boot drive. Personally I run SSD boot in cage 1 and 3 HDDs in the next 3 and plan to get a LSI 9211-8i or similar for HBA and connect it to the drive cage and leave the SSD on the B120i in AHCI. Also I've read some guys were able to boot one of the versions of Windows Server from USB used just for the booting part and still use a drive in the ODD as system drive. I'm fairly sure it can also be done with grub and a USB or microSD, but I don't have the time to mess with it now.

    From what I've read HP have worked on that and it's better the in the begging. I'm not sure if the fan is louder in AHCI but I my Microserver is in the same room I sleep and I can barely hear it. It is more silent them my tower PC which runs silent fans. The only time I've noticed it's loud is on boot and that's rare if you plan to use it 24/7.

    Sounds like the fan noise should be fine for me then as it will live in a cupboard under the stairs.
    I thought i had read somewhere that if you used a single disk raid 0 (not sure on what that's called) via the B120i then the data in the disk is not in raid format so you could take the disk out and mount it elsewhere and read the data. This is all based on stuff i've read and not seen so it might not be true.


    I'm thinking at the moment i could get a 2 port pci SATA card and set up as below.

    On my work we have an old DL380 G5 and a G6 over.
    I would like it to build it as a test server with OMV on it. The G5 hasnt a SD card slot, but OMV on a sd or thumbdrive isnt the best I noticed from others.
    I need a little help because I'm not an OMV or hardware specialist.
    What is the best manner to use this server? I dont know yet about how much memory but I guess its about 8-16gb.
    There are 300GB dual port sas disks and 146gb dual port sas disks, 8 slots per server.
    What is the best possible setup for this hardware?
    OMV on a stick, SD, or harddisk, or ESXI as base? I also read above about extra SSD for writings before it writes to raid set. How that works and how to setup? And how to install in the server?
    And for the data disks, in case of non-esxi base, raid via hardware or omv?

    You want to run OMV on its own drive, do not use anything over usb to host the operating system. A common practice would be to set drives 1 and 2 on a mirror (RAID 1) set with hardware RAID. Then set the rest of the drives however you want. Soft or hardware RAID is entirely up to you. Hardware RAID tends to be quicker when doing writes and uses less resources when recovering, but your array can only be used with that type of controller in the event you have to replace it. Soft RAID is the complete opposite and far more portable, but is not as reliable as hardware (in my experience).

    He's right though. This has been discussed MANY times. I'll say it again: Do NOT use anything other than a hard drive for OMV. SSDs of course being the exception. That means no SD cards, no USB flash drives, no compact flash cards, and nothing over USB even if is a hard drive. You have 8 drive slots, that leaves you 7 for storage and that should be plenty. If you cannot afford higher density SAS drives, simply mount SATA drives. The server is fully compatible with SATA and can still do RAID functions with them.
