Postfix occupies continuously 30 % of CPU

  • Hi again,

since weeks i detected a continuously 30 % usage of the CPU. Today i found out, that this cames from the "Postfix" User / Service so i decide to stop it (service postfix stop)
and now everything seems to be fine.

Any idea how to fix this without the need to stop the service.

    Thanks and greetings

Check the syslog for messages from postfix. They should help you to identify your problem. You can also have a look into the mailbox folder of the root user to find out how much messages are delivered. Login to CLI and execute the following command.

    List mailbox:

    Code
    mailq

    Read a mail:

    Code
    postcat -q <ID>
    e.g.:
    postcat -q A705238B4C
  • Syslog is full of Messages caused by Postfix. Mailbox is also full of undelivered mails... this also finally explains why the system drive space is growing every day (i guess that all the undeliverd messages are stored over there !?). Ok, how can i delete all the messages in the mailbox ?

  • Done, thanks... it deleted more then 4000 messages... this did not clean up the system drive space a lot,
but CPU is arround 10 to 14% now.

What i dont understand is, that postfix is doing things nearly every second if i check the syslog is this normal ?

postfix does this not on its own, you have the check which service is trying to send an email. To do this you should look into the messages with mailq and postcat as described above. This way you can find out who is sending the email and what is going wrong. I assume the monit daemon is the reason, but you have to check that.

  • Done, thread can be closed....

After deleting the Mailq i deactivated the message Service. I finally setup everything new.. SMTP Server, account name etc. and restart the postfix finally.
Mailq is now empty, syslog as well, send test mail - successfully done and received the mail. I have no idea what happend there. CPU usage now: between 1 and 5%

Thanks a lot for your support !

  • Hi!

I think I have the exact same problem after upgrading to Kralizec.

    If I run

    Code
    dpkg-reconfigure postfix

, what settings should I chose to have it set-up the right way?

    Thanks.

  • Hi @js74,

follow the above instructions... Check the Mailq, empty it if full. Check also your notification settings... i deleted mine and set it up again.
After all this i made it run.
