Hi,
I've installed an ESXi 5.5 and I've created an OMV 1.9 VM on this ESXi. All is OK, OMV seems to work well but now I would like to add 1 or 2 3TB HDD to OMV.
It seems I can't add raw HDD so I've tried to use this guide http://www.cyborgworkshop.org/…sata-access-in-esxi-free/ without success (I have an error message because of the disk size).
So is it possible to add HDD as virtual drive ? Or it's not recommended ? Could I use S.M.A.R.T. if I use virtual disks ?
Thanks !
OMV on ESXi and 3TB HDD ?

I am pretty damn sure you want to passthrough disks straight to OMV, you don't want to virtualize them at all.
This link may help, keep in mind I believe the best way to do it is to have a RAID card and just passthrough the whole thing to the VM but you might not be in a position to do that: -
Yes, you'll want to at least use RDM passthrough (as described in the link), or ideally pass through an entire controller with PCI passthrough which requires VT-d and might not be supported by your hardware.
I've done both, and I can confirm that SMART will not work with RDM passthrough, as the drives will appear as virtualized disks. However, with PCI passthrough, the virtual machine sees the controller as a normal physical controller, so SMART and everything else will work as expected.
I ran for several years with a VT-d and PCI passthrough setup up through ESXI 5.5, but I just switched back to OMV as the host O/S for simplicity. When I need VMs, the VirtualBox plugin works well enough for my purposes.
