Rsync not keeping original owner / group

  • Hi,

i have set up a OMV installation on a x86 System.
I attached a 500gb USB Drive with ntfs for tests.

I am syncing from a freenas system to the omv via rsync module.
it seems to work fine, but the owner changes to root. group also to root.
I checked preserve permission etc on the freenas system. I set -a option.

Is it because of the ntfs i am using on the usb-disk?

    Thanks in advance

    Yes.

  • Drives formatted as NTFS should not be used a permanent solution. I would format the drive ext4 if you want to use it with OMV. NTFS drives should only be mounted on a temporary basis to transfer files.

He said he was only using it for testing. That is why I didn't mention that.

  • Hi,

    ok thanks.

I know NTFS is not usefull.
But this OMV machine is only as 3rd backup solution.
This is why there are only usb discs AND they are ntfs.
In a desaster case i will be able to take the disc to the next computer and use them directly under windows.

    Thank you

    OMV is 3rd???

    USB disks are no problem.
NTFS is fine for transferring files but it doesn't support unix permissions. Not much we can do there.
You could still use a linux filesystem. In case of disaster, you could boot systemrescuecd or ubuntu live or whatever live linux distro you like on the next computer and recover them just as easily :)

  • Hi,

yes OMV is 3rd backup device :D (paranoid you can say)

I need to have a just in time use-case if the main Datastore (Freenas) dies.
Because maybe i am not at home, my father needs to just take the usb-disc to his computer and use the files. Thats why :D

    Thankys a lot!
