OMV hangs on boot

  • Hi

I have succesfully installed OMV. After setting up shares etc. and checking that everything worked OK, I powered dovn the system, moved it to is permanent location and powered up.
Now it won't boot, but hangs at the place where it says "checking quotas"

I don't have much Linux-experience, and I really don't know what to do, except from doing a complete reinstall :(

    System info:
Intel Core 2 duo with 1 Gb RAM
    System installed to USB stick
One 2 Gb for data, ext3

Sounds like the USB stick may be giving the problems.

  • OK. So I should try a new install on another USB stick?

Personally, I would use a hard drive but it is worth a try.

  • But a harddrive consumes more power. And I would have thought that a USB stick would be more stable, due to the lack of mechanical parts?

More power, yes but only by a watt or two over a laptop hard drive. More stable, no. USB sticks have limited amount of writes and fail early.

  • Thanks for the advice. A SSD would be tempting, but I found out that I had a 2,5" SATA disk lying around, so I will try that out first.
BTW: Any suggestions for power-saving settings on that one?

I actually just ran into this issue also (OMV .3 installed on a 2.5in drive that is working fine). My NAS never got passed it despite waiting a very long time (30min). Here's some info about the "quota check"

    http://www.intelligentedu.com/…ation_course/ch05s02.html

I'm not sure how this came to be a problem for me, as nothing on that page seems to indicate something on my NAS. I ended up doing a clean install of .3 and then doing some Googling to avoid this problem in the future. I then came across this command (posted by Volker in another thread on the old forum on this issue)

    update-rc.d quota disable

This disables the quota check (assuming you don't need it) and makes it a non issue.

Very helpful. While I haven't run into this, it would be nice if quotas were disabled by default when you aren't using them.

  • I had this problem recently with 0.4 OMV when the OMV guest (VBox 4.2) didn't shut down properly after window7 host slept. At first, I didn't know what happen and ended up remove the VM and recreated a clean VM. I did take a long long time to finish "checking quotas..."! very annoying~
Thanks for the thread! I will try it today.

  • This is my result. Anyone can explain please!?

    Code
    root@VB-OMV:~# update-rc.d quota disable
update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing
insserv: warning: current start rulevel(s) (empty) of script 'quota' overwrites defaults (S).
inserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (0 6 S) of script 'quota' overwrites defaults (0 6).

Just output from disabling quotas. Your system shouldn't check quotas when it boots now.

  • If using the command,

    update-rc.d quota disable

turns off OMV from checking for quotas will,

    update-rc.d quota enable

turn on quotas when and if they are needed?

And if so why not set up the GUI and underlying code to use the disable option if quotas are not being used? Basically turn it into a switch and have it show in the Services section.

  • Don't know that it is a bug so much as it is may be a feature request.

Though maybe OMV could/should check to see, if Quotas are enabled, then load the quota package, else not load it.
