workstation and omv together?

  • Hi folks,

i've got a question: I will upgrade my omv machine from a j1900/4gb to an i5(3rd gen.) with 8 gigs of ram. I want that extra power for plex running in the background as it begins to stutter when there are 3+ people trying to stream (transcode) 1080p content. The idea raised that I could use that machine as a workstation as well. So my question is wheter it's reasonable or not. (I know that you can install omv on a fresh debian install) Does the normal usage of a debian system result in a conflict with omv running in the background?

    thank you very much :)

The typically don't conflict. I still wouldn't do it but that is my opinion. Try it in a VM.

  • The problem which i faced back then was that the superuser for the Debian GUI was switched to a user openmediavault, instead of root. I didn't investigate much further which password it might have, nor did I try to change it. This happend when I installed OpenMediaVault on a Debian with Desktop.

I don't know if it still behaves like that on the newer releases of OpenMediaVault. I also don't know if this happens when you install the Desktop after you install OpenMediaVault.

I don't use a full fledged Desktop anymore.

    Greetings
