gmail for notifications - SASL authentication failed error

  • I'm trying to get notifications working through my regular gmail account and I can't seem to get it working. TO verify that it wasn't a firewall issue from my OMV box I ran
    nc -zv smtp.gmail.com 465
    with results of
    DNS fwd/rev mismatch: gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com != pf-in-f108.1e100.net
    DNS fwd/rev mismatch: gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com != pf-in-f109.1e100.net
    gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com [173.194.202.108] 465 (ssmtp) open
    I've also tried port 587
    nc -zv smtp.gmail.com 587
    DNS fwd/rev mismatch: gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com != pf-in-f108.1e100.net
    DNS fwd/rev mismatch: gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com != pf-in-f109.1e100.net
    gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com [173.194.202.108] 587 (submission) open

    That suggests to me that there is nothing wrong with my network setup.

    I set the notification post up with
    SMTP server - smtp.gmail.com
    SMTP port - 465
    Use SSL/TTS is enabled
    sender email is myemail@gmail.com
    username myemail@gmail.com
    password thecorrectone
    primary email myotheremail@gmail.com
    secondary email blank

    saved, applied and then I send a test email from OMV.

    nothing arrives and in the system log I see
    Sep 24 21:54:02 openmediavault postfix/cleanup[2850]: A66568C0E8A: message-id=<20150925045402.A66568C0E8A@openmediavault.localdomain>

    Sep 24 21:54:02 openmediavault postfix/smtp[2851]: instead, send to (port submission/587) with STARTTLS

    If I change to SMTP port 587 and send another test email nothing arrives and the system log shows

    I logged out and back into gmail via the web browser as I think that's what the error message was about and that didn't change anything. I intentionally set the password wrong and sent another test messages

    Any suggestions? I can't be the only person here wanting gmail for notifications

  • I managed to get my gmail account working (after some dificulties I remember). I will have a look when I'm back home and try to give you my settings. But it can take a while today.

    OMV7.x

    AMD Ryzen 5 5600G

    ASRock B550M Pro4

    Crucial DIMM 16GB

    Western Digital WD Blue SN570

    Seagate IronWolf 8TB/WD Red 8TB

    AeroCool CS-102

  • Ok, here are my settings as promised. I moreover remember playing around with the Google savety settings like two steps verification, unsecure apps etc. (I don't know the exact english terms).

    This is my working config, I keep getting every wanted information.

  • Ok for anyone else that comes across this issue I got it working.

    my settings are the same as above, smtp.gmail.com, Port 587 SSL/TTS and require authentication both turned on. In gmail I had to activate 2 step verification, at https://myaccount.google.com/security

    When that was setup App Passwords showed up below the 2 step verification. Click on that

    I added an app called OMV it generated a password.

    In OMV I used myemailaddress@gmail.com as the username and the generated password. Save, apply, test email arrives.

    Done.
