buy advice for new homeserver

  • Hi,

i’m looking for a new omv server.
I’m not clear which cpu i need for my new server.
At the moment my system is an old athlon II x2 250 with 8gb RAM.
The old system got problems during transcode the hd tv.

I want to use the following services on the serverPlexmediaserver inclusiv transoding
    - Tvheadend inclusiv trancoding
    - Zoneminder as surveilance sollution
    - pyload
    - samba
Transcoding = i want to transode any videosource for my ipad, iphone, plex on firetv, plex on smarttv and so on.
It should also be possible to transcode up 4 HD streams at the same time.
Perhaps also capable to stream 4k movies.

    Hardware requirments:
2x Gigabit Nics on Board (port trunking) if possible both intel nic
    1x SATA for SSD
6-10x Sata für HDD (WD Red 3TB)

    Allready here:
ATX 19" Rack (cant remember the suplier :?: )
    SSD Toshiba thnsnj25
    4x WD10EADS (age about 5 years)

Dont want to pay to much for the new system and for the power of the year. 24/7

Any advice for a CPU and mainboard are welcome.

    Cheers Robert

  • @duna4
are you sure that the atom has enough power to transcode 4 hd streams at the same time?
According to plex i need for each stream 2000 passmark points.

Means after my research i need at least an xenon e3-12xx .

    After a search on https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ the C2750 ATOM got a Reating 3560

You probably need an i7. Definitely not going to do it with an i3.

He didn't say i3. He said xeon e3-12xx which is equivalent to a high end i5/low end i7. That is what I have in my home server. I haven't tried four hd streams but it had no problem with two hd and two sd streams.

He said he researched it and needed an xeon e3-12xx. That told me it was known that an i3 was not good enough. So, why recommend a more expensive cpu?

  • It is really crazy to see that i need an xeon.
I can't believe that plex needs so much power.

You don't need that much power unless you are truly transcoding four HD streams at the same time. Are you really doing that??

  • Or forget about Intel and buy an AMD FX chip. The chip I have happily transcodes 3 streams. If you go for a FX8320E, with will be able to run 4 streams no problems (I tested that chip on my Windows box and it can do 4 streams no problems). You can also use ECC RAM on the FX platform if you choose your motherboard carefully - most Asus AM3+ board work and support ECC.

It's very difficult to beat the FX line for price/performance. My CPU and motherboard cost the same as an i5 chip alone.

Power consumption isn't a massive issue either, it idle about 30W and transcoding it's using 120W peak.

About to move to OMV 3.0, running Sonarr, Emby, NZBGet on a Pentium G4520 on an AsRock B150M Pro4S and 16GB DDR4 in a Lian-Li PC-M25A case.
Sub 10W idle power draw, thanks to SuperFlower 350W 80Plus Gold PSU.
