Can't search for common words on forum

  • What good is a forum that is configured to not allow a search such as "install transmission"?

When I try that search I get this error:
The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: transmission install.

    This is just ridiculous

Volker could probably lower the common word threshold but phpBB search is terrible no matter how it is setup.

I've often wondered... since I'm sure Volker puts a lot of time into managing this forum, etc..

Has he considered possibly trying to get a subforum on Linuxquestions.org? The infrastructure is there, and all he'd really have to worry about is support (unless I'm missing something).

I think the only issue, would be having "sub forums" which I don't think would be allowed in this scenario.

  • I've been managing a few forums running vBulletin, Invision Power Board, phpBB and some others over the years. They ALL rely on MySQL's built-in indexing and searching, which is poor at best. It's not a setting you can just turn on, it's the whole design of the most basic statistical keyword indexing and blind index searching. Out of despair, some forums added a google search plugin, which adds some intelligence to the search mechanism. The true alternative for an improved search is to install Sphinx Search Server - but you can't do that on shared hosting, only on your own server.

  • i agree same problem i had searching for older issues and the worse is that when using google you end up finding the old forum links and can only use the cache option in google.
This forum is really bad in searching so people start asking the same questions which had been maybe already solved.
