Raid re-config

  • Righto.

Currently I have the following setup using 4 x 3TB drives.

I would like to change it to a Raid 5 config, using the 4 drives available and a 2TB drive in my pc.

    My plan,
Back up what I can from M1 to separate 2TB drive.
    Break down M1 (drive 1 & drive 2)
Pull a single drive from M2 (drive 3) - will the data still be safe and accessible?
Create a Raid5 using the 2 drives from M1 and the single drive from M2 (drive 1, 2 and 3)
Copy data from the other M2 drive (drive 4) over to Raid5
Grow Raid5 to incorporate drive 4.

    Would that work?
Is it likely to to rip a hole in time and space?
Am I being an idiot by not understanding how things work?

    Cheers.

If you could just go ahead and make a plugin for it, that'd be great.

Your plan should work. It won't be fast and you risk loosing a lot of data if drive 4 or the separate 2 tb drive fails. You won't be able to build the degraded raid 5 array with the web interface though. Personally, I would do all of it from the command line.

  • Drive 4 should be fine... I hope.

I've not built a Raid array from command line before, how difficult is the process?

How reliable is a Raid5 array in OMV ?

If you could just go ahead and make a plugin for it, that'd be great.

Command line is not bad. Just time consuming but it is slow from web interface too.

My raid 5 array at home has been in place for 4+ years. If the server runs 24/7 with battery backup on the system, I would say they are great. If you turn it off all the time and/or no battery backup, people seem to have a few more problems. Just remember that raid is not a backup. Do you need redundancy or pooling or both?

Is it on 24/7 and have battery backup?

I wouldn't run an array without battery backup (personal opinion).

I would use the unionfilesystem plugin to pool the drives (mergerfs) and use snapraid for redundancy. If your data doesn't change much, you could probably run snapraid sync once a day for your redundancy.

  • The last time I had a power outage was bout 15yrs ago,
I'm more concerned with drive failure, hence the use of a Raid.

I've tested the process of awesomeness in a VM and it all seems to work fine.

Just got to move data about now.

If you could just go ahead and make a plugin for it, that'd be great.

Even an outage of just a few seconds that causes a reboot?

  • Not had a power outage, even for a second, in over 15yrs.
I live in a major city in the UK, our grid is pretty damn good.

If you could just go ahead and make a plugin for it, that'd be great.

That is impressive. I have good power too but not quite that good :)
