i did for a few times and even reinstalled it:

I don't use virtualbox anymore. Not sure what is wrong. Try uninstalling the plugin and reinstalling.

I did it before, it didn't help. I'm using virtualbox alot, because I have ~4 VMs running.

Maybe you should switch to Proxmox or ESXi then. I use Proxmox myself with my main OMV server as a VM.

how is the performance? Do I have full access on the HDDs because of AUFS/mergerfs?

The performance is much better than virtualbox. It is a light weight hypervisor instead of full virtualization.

Yes, you can passthrough the drive to the VM and then use mergerfs inside the VM.

and if the OMV crashes for some reasons - can I insert the HDDs in another OMV-Server and access the data?

Yep because the drives are passed through, they aren't any different (use normal filesystem) than using native OMV.

And what's about the idle-power consumption? If OMV does nothing, is the CPU-Load of the Server = 0 like it is using only omv?

Yes. It is very low. OMV is always doing something no matter how it is installed. So, it won't be zero. According to the proxmox web interface, one of my OMV VMs is using 0.1% of one cpu while idling. Trust me. Proxmox is a frontend for KVM (built into the linux kernel) and is much better and more efficient than virtualbox.

I use the VMs for different things and they're not running all the time. Still worth to use proxmoxx?

OMV 3.x uses virtualbox 5.x. I wrote a script to upgrade OMV 2.x installs to 5.x but it is somewhat dated now.

Yes. Make a clone of the system using clonezilla and then restore it to a VM using clonezilla again. I have done it with my systems before. You will just have to fix the networking.
