Samba recycle bin for user home shares?

  • Hello guys,
this is my first post here and I am not a native English speaker. So I apoligize in advance for grammar mistakes.

I am trying to activate recycle bin for user home shares. On a regular share it can be activated. For the users I have activated "Enable user home directories". Then the share will be created automatically when the user is created and cannot be found in the regular share overview.

But I was not able to activate the recycle bin for the user home directories. There is no option to activate. Maybe it would be possible to activate it by an "vfs objects = recycle"-entry in the general SMB/CIFS-settings. But if that would work, I don´t think that the automatic emptying after some days would work.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks subzero79. So I do understand that this feature is currently not implemented.

I found a temporary solution while adding these 5 lines to the extra options field in the SMB/CIFS settings tab:

    vfs objects = recycle
    recycle:repository = .recycle
    recycle:keeptree = yes
    recycle:versions = yes
    recycle:exclude_dir = .recycle

Then every user gets a .recyle folder in it´s home dir if something is deleted. But the auto purging of the recycle bin must be solved by other means.

  • Hey cabrio_leo

today I stubled over this issue as my daughter deleted some files within her home.

Until today I thought there was a recyclebin as well and now found out, it's (correctly :) ) only on shares configured for (so works as designed)

But I realy think it's especially useful for homes to be able to restore accidentially deleted files.

Your solution seems not to work anymore.

At least the shares don't show a recyle-dir after deletion of a file.

do you have any update on that configuration to keep it running?

Update: okay, found out it's the line "vfs objects =" added to the home-shares that overrides the global setting.

Commenting this line makes the recyle-folder working.

But this may lead to a deactivation anytime the configuration gets rewritten.

Is there any "clean" solution for this?

I can't imagine anyone else beside of us to is missing that feature!?

(okay i'm a omv user since 2013 and just found out today that i am missing it :) )

FYI: opened a feature request: https://github.com/openmediavault/openmediavault/issues/1171 any additional information there is welcome

This thread is old. Samba settings have an option to enable Trash. Doesn't it work for you?

This thread is about the home-shares not the individual shares

and the home shares dont have that option:

You're right, I didn't read the whole thread. It seems that in OMV6 this remains the same.
