Disk size to Mirror or Raid 10

    I have 4 IDE HDD 160 gb and 2 SATA HDD 80gb, i try create raid 10 or mirror disk, but then I select all disk, my crieated disk size shows 80 gb, how to do my disk have 160+160+80=400 gb?


    And if I later change 2 sata HDD 80, to 2 sata HDD 250 gb it change easy or its need remove raid disk and create for new raid disk?

    your calculations are wrong.


    in regular raid the array capacity is calculated using smallest disk in the pool(except RAID-0).
    ie. since you have 80gb drives, if you use all drives to build the pool
    the total raid disk size will be 6x80 = 240 GB


    if you want to fudge a bit to get the capacity you can partition all of your 160GB disks into 2 partition 80GB each and build array using partitions hence 10 devices x80GB in RAID-10 will give you 400GB pool.
    BUT be aware that if once of the 160GB disks fails it will counts as 2 device failure in array.

    Witch the better Mirror or Raid 10 choose create pool? Because I want to create disk that the same info duplicate in to two disk.
    If I created 4 disk for 160 gb, I have 320gb in Mirror or Raid 10 and one disk will die and I change the disk, it is working good or broke the entire pool? And Open Media Vault shows witch disk is bad?

  • raid10 is also a mirror , just different from raid1 in the way it is buld.

    with 4+ disk you get a better tolerance of array to double disk failure compared to raid-1 and a faster writes.


    not sure if OMV will show you any data on what disk failed but you can always do mdadm --manage from CLI, and set SMART checks on schedule as well
