Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.omv-extras.org:http'

  • I am daily getting the following message from CRON-APT:

OMV 4.1.30-1 (Arrakis); Shuttle XPC SH67H3; Intel Core i5-2390T; 8 GB DDR3-1333 RAM; 128GB SanDisk Z400s SSD (OS); Samsung 860 EVO 1TB (primary storage).

  • This is a dns issue on your end. packages.omv-extras.org has an IP of: 178.63.91.237 and the server is working fine.

  • Are you sure it can't be something within OMV somewhere, because other devices on the same network, including an Ubuntu 16.04 server, resolve to the correct IP address, and with dig I can see it is a CNAME record pointing to omv-extras.org.

The network gateway is pfSense, and I have never had any issues with anything after they switched to DNS Resolver (unbound) as default, so I don't even know what to check there.

  • Are you sure it can't be something within OMV somewhere,

Are you asking if it is an OMV bug? No, I don't think so. If other systems on your network are ok, then it is the network/dns setup on your OMV box. I have at least 10 functioning OMV setups and none of them have a problem resolving omv-extras.org. Not sure how a system would have problems only resolving one domain name.

  • Okay, so I just received today's message and when I immediately used dig from a different server, it listed the TTLs as completely fresh, so it wasn't cached, which, as I understand it, means there was no lookup performed by OMV (or anything else on the network).

  • I also just realized that it is spitting out one of two different IP addresses:

    128.31.0.63 PTR mirror-csail-security.debian.org
    128.61.240.73 PTR sechter.debian.org

  • Still getting one or two of these emails everyday.

If you think there is a DNS issue on my end, please let me know how to find it so I can report it to the Unbound team.

  • I assume the email says it still isn't resolving omv-extras.org? What is the output of: traceroute omv-extras.org

  • Do you have the flashmemory plugin installed? What is the output of (as root): ls -al /var/spool/ and mailq

If there are a lot of mails in the mailq command, do postsuper -d ALL

If you run that command and you have the flashmemory plugin installed, do: folder2ram -syncall
