ryecoaaron, i'm a little confused mate.
Are you saying I can use the version 4 plugin like this one?
So just upload that deb via the plugins screen, enable docker ce in the repos screen then install?

Do anyone have a review or few words about how Helis4 performs?
I'm tempted to buy into the second batch. I'm looking for a something to handle my fileserver needs, and as I'm living in a small apartment both size and noise are two very important factors. Running 2 HDDs right now but going to get 1-2 more.
I have a Intel NUC with can handle heavier servertasks so the NAS would mostly just hold and distribute files. At the moment the NUC also handles the NAS task with an 2 bay USB-C HDD enclosure. Unfortunatly it just doesn't work good at all, I get disk in/out error all the time and sometimes it just dies.
Could Helois4 be something for me? Or do anyone have other suggestions I could look at?

Maybe you should buy Hp Microserver,he's small in size and has 4Sata ports.

Helios4 is based on exactly the same Armada 38x SoM as Solid-Run's Clearfog Pro. These Marvell Armada ARM SoCs are around since a long time and made for NAS and router use cases (very high IO and network throughput).
Maybe even more important: No USB(3) hassles involved (though there are USB3 ports too IIRC). Silly me rejected a Helios4 developer sample since I've already a Clearfog Pro as NAS. Performance with Helios4 should be slightly better since AFAIK they allow the CPU cores to clock up to 1.8 GHz (needs good heat dissipation).

If you plan to keep all disks spinning 24/7 you could also consider something like a HP Microserver since consumption difference then won't be that huge any more. If you allow disks to spin down then of course this makes a lot of difference since the Armada SoM idles at around 5W.

Thanks for the advice!
I have looked at HP Miroservers but they will always be more expansive, take up more space and more noise. I think it is overkill for what I need at the moment. But I will keep my eyes out for a good deal.
I looked through your links @tkaiser, good reading! The Rockchip64 NAS kit could be a option, as well as Renegade Pro. The Rockchip has the benefit of being avaible right now of caurse but I would really like it to be able to hold 4 3,5" drives. And it's not that much cheaper.
The Renegade Pro looks really interesting but that will definiatly be several months before it ships, if they meet their goal, and then I have to get m2 to Sata card and an enclosure.
It still looks like Helios is the best NAS option, would a really liked at metal enclosure thou.
Will see, I have to think through it some more and continue looking at alternatives. -

I went and ordered one in the end.
Looking forward to getting it! -
Why does it cost $194 now?

Hey guys just a quick question although a little off topic.
I’ve setup my Helios 4 (loving it btw) currently as just a backup server but wanted to consider it for my media server.Currently I use plex server on my HP N40L micro server.
Is there any website that would compare the cpu of the N40L (AMD Turion II Neo N40L 1.5GHz) with the helios4?
I am considering using the helios4 for plex but didn’t want to go through the hassle if there wasn’t too much difference for transcoding (for remote viewing).
Does anyone have any experience or any thoughts?
Thanks -

In my opinion the 7-zip benchmark mode more or less realistically describes 'CPU power for server loads'. Numbers are available: -
@tkaiser i've read your posts about helios4 last year and got very exited about it, although it was not possible to order it until today (https://shop.kobol.io/collections/frontpage).
Few Questions are left:
- I want to import the Kit to Germany - do you have experienced any troubles with customs or had to pay taxes?
- Do you know about any plans to bulk order to save shipping?
- Do you think that helios4 is still the best ARM board with ECC & Native SATA?Thank you in advance.

Nope since I've no Helios4 (Gauthier asked whether I want a dev sample last year but since I've too much on my desk already I refused).Wrt ECC RAM it's simple: if you love your data use ECC RAM (and a checksummed filesystem like ZFS and btrfs especially if you don't want to afford ECC RAM)

How does Helios4 relate to OMV?
Hi all, especially tkaiser... thanks for all the work put into OMV, the forum, the documentation and summary in this thread. I'm on my own first journey into NAS for home and home-office use as a non-pro.
Helios4 I'm looking seriously at supporting this... it demonstrates the power of the ARM architecture for this use. (& I've now read though the whole thread, still interested...)
https://shop.kobol.io/products…er?variant=18881501593673[edit; I took the plunge! Helios4 3rd batch on order... will report back in June!]
Meanwhile I will re-purpose an old Toshiba notebook as a NAS to get me going. RasPi is definitely not a durable NAS solution but it's an education tool and OMV will run OK on it for learning purposes!

Hi, an update on the Helios4 an email blast went out recently giving details of a small incentive to encourage orders...
https://blog.kobol.io/2019/03/04/3rd-campaign-update/
'Free OLED screen'
It may be of interest to some...I like this project after doing a hell of a lot of reading on this forum and elsewhere... also looking through tons of parts retailer websites, networking vendors, second hand gear (HP Microservers) and all kinds of other options... including stuff I simply can't get under warranty in Aussie land (I'm looking at you, ASRock Rack!) and now, apart from the waiting, this looks like a great solution to me... (no, I will not buy off the shelf NAS!)
The only real setback is the waiting time and I'm willing to wait now I have an old notebook PC set up!

Well based on the current traction of the Helios4 3rd campaign, I don't think we will manufacture that much of extra kit anymore... we might end up just manufacturing few dozens more on top. So if you want to be guaranty to get an Helios4 you should order before the end of the campaign. I must admit this was a complete marketing newbie mistake I did, because now potential buyers are being in 'wait-and-see' mode.
To try to boost a bit the sale we are now including a free OLED screen for the first 300 orders https://blog.kobol.io/2019/03/04/3rd-campaign-update/Hi gprovost, i'm sorry for that. I've called my Customs Office in Germany (Zoll) today and got the following information: The additional Taxes, "Einfuhrumsatzsteuer", are 19% of value of goods + shipping. There are no additional limits, so it would be smart to order es many as possible... The Customs Officer also told me i should choose the national shipping service instead of a private one ( i think, HK Post instead of FedEx in this case) because they won't charge additional fees for "customs service" or at least a small amount. I'm now trying to find one or more german Customers who wants to buy an helios4
EDIT:
Okay, savings are not that high with bulk order. It might be not sensible to do this.https://docs.google.com/spread…IHA3u-s8/edit?usp=sharing
EDIT2: I bought 2 - sadly, HK Post is only avalible for Germany if only one is bought. Is this correct @gprovost ?

This is a little shady but...
Hardkernel used FedEx when I ordered some Odroid stuff. and somehow FedEx bypassed Swedish Customs. And I just paid shipping to get the stuff from Korea Twice...So it seems tha FedEx is a very bad way to ship stuff internationally. In a useful way... No Idea if the same applies to FedEx in Germany...

Sorry, i don't get your point. If FedEx bypassed Customs, why you had to pay twice?
-
Yes, that is right. Twice. Weird, yes?
I ordered two separate times from Korea, a few months, apart and FedEx bypassed customs both times. So twice I just paid extra for shipping but no customs fee was added.
