Adding 3 more drives to a raid6 array then expanding File System

  • What makes you say that? Check out Snapraid - it offers quite a bit of flexibility in drive configuration. I just think most people running raid don't really need the availability that it offers, and put themselves at risk for data loss since they aren't fully invested in upkeep of the array and backups. In your example, going from a 3 + 2 raid6 array to a 6 + 2 raid6 array increases risk of failure. Chance of failure during rebuild is always higher as well. More than 2 concurrent failures and your goose is cooked and you loose the whole array.
