Began Installing OMV Over Raid 5

  • Hi all,

So I've done something silly; my OMV drive failed earlier today and so I reinstalled OMV but didn't realise that you should remove data drives during the install and so it appears I've began installing over my Raid 5 data drives (x4 4TB drives)
I cancelled the install but I'm not sure if the damage has been done:
(The original Raid was the top one but I now have the additional three below it).

I'm unsure how to go about recovering this if recovery of any of the data is even possible. Let alone what my next steps are - any help would be greatly appreciated before I mess it up further :(

    Thanks.

Sure hope you have a backup (but I'm guessing you don't.. bet you will after today).

How far were you in to the installation? Was the drive being formatted and the installation started? I'm assuming so. It looks from your pics, the drives are all in sync...

If you go to shared folders and try to create one, I take it you can't see any of your raid5 drives to try and add shares?

    What a mess.

Good luck, you're probably gonna need it.

  • So much toast :(

A backup strategy is worthless unless you have a verified to work by testing restore strategy.

  • Cheers for the replies,

I had assumed that was the case. Will be a bit more careful installing in the future know I know it uses the first drive it finds...

The installation got about 20-30% of the way through and up to dev/SDA and dev/SDB. I stopped the installation at that point but I'm assuming it's all gone. I'm also unable to create a shared folder as none of the raid's show up.

Got a back up of most of my pictures from the drive but managed to lose everything else?

Will definitely be more careful and will look into some off site backups too...

    Cheers all.

Well, hopefully you have the really important stuff backed up.

You don't really need "off site" (although it's night). You can buy an external and back your NAS up to that once a week, or whenever you feel appropriate.

You may get better answers later if you hold off a it before nuking the raid from orbit.

    Good luck
