i am planning to upgrade to version 4.
I have the problem that I don't seem to login with my ssh user properly to get the upgrade going.

There are multiple threads on this issue if you search.
Keeping your system up to date regularly rather than waiting till an OS is End of Life to try an upgrade will prevent this in the future.

Login as root or use sudo
sudo omv-release-upgrade.
For this the user must be member of the sudo group. -
