Mixed feelings about OMV5

  • I have been a long time fan of OMV. I've always loved its simplicity over others, especially its easy to install plugins. But after browsing through these forums I'm a bit hesitant to jump into OMV5. I've read posts that say OMV5 is faster. I've also read that its slower but easier for developers to make plugins. But developers don't want to make or maintain plugins which is fare enough.
My past experience with docker images isn't great. To find one good one you have to test ten others first. Then getting them to run perfectly the way you want takes a Linux guru. So you find yourself back on the forum bugging developers for help. I'm concerned it might take a lot of effort to build a stable system :|

Is OMV5 really going to be user friendly for all or only the specialists?

I would love to read some other users experiences before jumping it. How much luck have you had with dockers like Plex, Nextcloud, Duplicate etc.

    Thanks, Baldman :)

  • So I did it because I needed some features of Debian 10. And thanks to the fact that almost all my apps are Docker Containers setup with docker compose, it was quite simple. I just copied my .yml files, executed them and docker compose did its magic. There was some issues setting up OMV but all in all it took me 1 day to upgrade. May be a good idea to familiarize yourself with docker before trying to upgrade. I know that problem of having the choice between lots of containers. I feel very happy with the containers of linuxserver.io. In my case only pihole is an official one. But I would not recommend upgrading as long as OMV4 is stable and supported unless there is a special advantage doing so.

Oh by the way I think you have created the thread twice.

  • Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking. I would definitely setup a test machine cause it sounds like lots of testing ..lol. I can see the pros in docker images but there's definitely cons too. So much easier with plugins. Maybe we need an OMV recommended docker image list :)

Maybe like OMV-Extras we could have OMV-Dockers? ...Just a thought :D

Until we have more plugin devs, it doesn't matter if plugins are easier. Although I disagree that plugins are easier. Most complaints about plugins were that they used out of date packages (fixed by docker) or the plugin didn't expose X feature (fixed by docker) or they caused system instability (fixed by docker). All of these far outweigh the extra few clicks needed in portainer.

Ive been using omv 5 in vbox for about 5-6 weeks and I have had very few problems. After a good bit of work, I've got all my containers set up as docker compose files.

Wednesday (hopefully), I'm gonna nuke my virtual machine and reinstall everything, then deploy everything again with docker compose. I'm guessing it will take about 20min after install to have everything set up and configured for first use.

I thought about getting really froggy and creating one docker compose file to install all 14 containers I use at the same time... But I think right now I'll leave well enough alone.

I'm excited about omv 5. Only "plugin" I will use is rsync
