Installation of devices

  • Hi. Introduced myself to OMV5 for the first time last week.

    Background

I'm a relatively new user to Linux over the past year and only manage to do anything via tutorials :)

I'm very inexperienced with command line!

I have setup a trial OMV5 on a PC using a 240gb sata system disk and a couple of HDDs to toy with , with the intention of reinstalling from scratch once comfortable. I have played with setting up dockers (Plex, tvmosaic) and plugins. Techno Dad is the don!

    Current question

I'm confused how to utilise hardware devices though with OMV. For example, I have a blackgold dvb tuner PCI card installed. How do I "discover" devices and install drivers?

OMV is software for a NAS.

However OMV is built on top of Debian Linux. Possibly the most standard Linux distro existing. So software and hardware that can run on Debian often can run on OMV. But it doesn't always make sense to do so, even if it might be possible.

Usually supported hardware hardware is detected automagically. Just plug it in and power up. No need to install any drivers. However not all hardware is supported. A lot of hardware only works on Windows and Macs.

Naturally you then need software that use the hardware. DVR software or whatever.

Advanced users can check if manufacturer provides software to make hardware work or you can compile your own kernel.

You can also run docker images on the OMV NAS. However the docker images typically run without any control by OMV. The docker images sometimes just utilize the storage and shares that OMV provides, and share the processing power.

If you want to make some wonderful hardware work on your OMV box, start by making it work on a Debian box. Or in a docker image. Most likely you will find a lot more information if you search for how to get something to work in Docker, on Debian or Linux than if you search for how to get it to work on OMV.

Be smart - be lazy. Clone your rootfs.
